ELEANOR V. (KELLEY) SOLOMON [Cumberland]

CUMBERLAND — Eleanor Virginia Kelley Solomon, 94, of Cumberland, passed away peacefully on Saturday, March 9, 2013.

Born in Markleton, Pa., on Aug. 21, 1918, to the late Ruth Hillegas Kelley and Norman Mitchner Kelley, Eleanor Virginia was raised in Hyndman, Pa., graduating from Hyndman High School in 1936 and later from Catherman’s Business School in Cumberland. She married her next door neighbor and high school sweetheart, “Ed” Solomon, on Sept. 7, 1940. They were active in the family lumber business, Pennsylvania Lumber & Post Company, in Hyndman and thereafter of LaVale.

Mrs. Solomon was preceded in death by her husband, William Edward (Ed) Solomon, on Jan. 7, 2009; and her only sibling, Norma Kelley Hilton, previously of Washington, D.C., on May 13, 2002.

She is survived by her only child, a daughter, Elaine Kelley Solomon, of LaVale and Chester/Kent Island.

Eleanor, a resident of LaVale since 1945, moved to the Kensington Assisted Living in September 2009 to “be more social” as she said. Through the years, Eleanor was an active member of the First Presbyterian Church, serving as an Elder, Usher, Greeter, member of Sarah’s Circle, The Highlanders and the Pastoral Care Committee. In 1989 she became a 50 year member of McKinley Chapter 12 Order of the Eastern Star. She belonged to the Cresap Chapter-National Society Daughters of the American Revolution; Woman’s Civic Club; LaVale Century Club; Mother’s Club; Women’s Sport Club; Allegany County Historical Society and the Algonquin Chapter of the National Secretaries Association.

The Solomon’s, former members of the Queen City Chapter (formed in 1963), the Bedford (PA) Chapter and the Winchester/Shenandoah Region (VA) chapter of the Antique Automobile Association of America, enjoyed many car trips and gatherings, both locally and nationally, in their antique cars. Mrs. Solomon was editor of the newsletter and was awarded the David T. Davis Memorial Trophy for her outstanding contributions to the local automotive care chapter in 1982.

Eleanor rejoined the workforce in Technical Personnel at Allegany Ballistics Lab/Hercules in the early 1960’s; she later was employed as the Registrar’s secretary at Allegany College on Frederick Street, and completed her career with the Allegany County Board of Education for 20 years as School Secretary at West Side Elementary, Columbia Street Elementary, and Washington Junior High School from where she retired in 1983. For many years after her retirement, Eleanor was a greeter at the Hafer Funeral Home in LaVale.

An avid reader, Eleanor enjoyed traveling, playing bridge, movies and walking, as well as being at the Solomon’s Turkey Neck cottage on Deep Creek Lake from 1951 through 2001. She was involved in various community activities, modeled at fashion shows, and served as a hostess at History House, Toll House and Washington’s Cabin at Riverside Park. She will fondly be remembered as a friendly, outgoing and caring person by those who knew her.

Viewing will be at the Upchurch Funeral Home, P.A., 202 Greene St., Cumberland, from on Sunday, March 10, 2013 from 6 to 8 p.m. and on Monday, March 11, 2013 from 10 to 11 a.m. The service will follow on Monday at 11 a.m. and will be conducted by the family’s dear friend, Pastor Ken Korns.

Interment will follow in the family plot at of Hillcrest Cemetery, Cumberland.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Solomon Family Scholarship, established at Allegany College of Maryland upon Ed Solomon’s death in 2009, ACM Foundation, 12401 Willowbrook Road, Cumberland, MD 21502 or the charity of one’s choice.

The family wishes to thank the staff of the Kensington Assisted Living for their kindness and care through the  years of Eleanor’s residency.
