JOSEPHINE L. CROFT [Cumberland]

CUMBERLAND — Josephine L. Croft, 88, of Cumberland, died Saturday, Jan. 5, 2013, at her residence with her husband of 68 years, Charles L. Croft, Sr., at her side.

Born Feb. 13, 1924, in Hutton, she was the daughter of the late Joseph T. and Myrtle A. (Markley) Rodeheaver. She was also preceded in death by four brothers, Russell Rodeheaver, Ralph Rodeheaver, Lofton Rodeheaver and Henry Rodeheaver; a sister, Mary Wilt and, a daughter-in-law, Linda (Byer) Croft.

“Jo” graduated from Oakland High School and moved to Cumberland immediately afterwards. She was working at the Cumberland Celanese Plant when she met her future husband and they were married on Dec. 24, 1944, at Emmanuel Episcopal Church. Jo later worked in food service for the Allegany County Board of Education at the former Johnson Heights Elementary School.

Jo was a member of Emmanuel Parish, where she previously taught Sunday School and belonged to St. Catherine’s Circle.  She was also a member and served as president for many years of the Altar Ward.

In addition to her husband, Jo is survived by her daughter, Patricia Stevens and husband  James H. Stevens Jr., of Cumberland; her son, Charles L. Croft, Jr. and wife Sherry, of Short Gap, W.Va.; two sisters, Catherine Emerick, of Cumberland  and Rosalie Baker, of Oakland; a number of nieces and nephews and a special great-granddaughter, Sophia Moyer, of Frostburg.

Friends will be received at the Upchurch Funeral Home, P.A., 202 Greene St., Cumberland, on Sunday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m.

Services will be conducted in the Emmanuel Episcopal Church on Monday at 1 p.m. with the Rev. Edward C. Chapman  officiating.

Interment will be in Hillcrest Memorial Park.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may be directed to the Summer Lunchbox Program, c/o Emmanuel Episcopal Church, 16 Washington St., Cumberland, MD 21502.

The family would like to thank those who provided at home services, WMHS Hospice team and Jo’s sitters, Carol, Nancy, Belinda, Brandi and Colby.
