SHIRLEY O’NEAL [Carpendale, W.Va.]

CARPENDALE, W.Va. — “Lord you said, ‘Once I decided to follow you, you’d walk with me all the time. But during my hardest times in life there was only one set of footprints in the sand. Why?” The Lord responded, “My child I never left you.  That was when I carried you.”

The Lord carried Shirley to stay with him on Saturday morning, the 13th of April, 2013.

Born Aug. 16, 1942, in Cumberland, she was the daughter of the late Walter and Sarah (Kearchner) Welsh.

She graduated from Fort Hill High School, class of 1961. Shirley previously was employed at Memorial Hospital and Cumberland Nursing Home as a Nurse’s Aide. She was a member of Holy Cross United Methodist Church, Carpendale, and their women’s group.

Shirley enjoyed her gospel music. She was a woman of God and a mighty prayer warrior. She loved her family deeply and everybody was a friend.

She married her high school sweetheart and had celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary. She was a loving wife, mother  and grandmother.

Survivors include her husband, Virgil G. O’Neal Jr.; a daughter, Lora A. Smith and husband Dale, of Winchester, Va.; a son, Michael W. O’Neal and wife Carla, of Bunker Hill, W.Va.; one brother, Walter F. Welsh and wife Mary Ann, of Cumberland; three grandsons, Timothy Weslow, Andrew Weslow/O’Neal and Michael W. O’Neal Jr.; a sister-in-law, Loretta McGowan and husband Melvin, of Front Royal, Va. and several cousins, nieces, and nephews. Shirley had many special friends, including Randa Murray, Bonnie Louk and Ann Buskirk. She dearly loved her dogs, Lucky and Patches.

Friends will be received at the Upchurch Funeral Home, P.A., 202 Greene St., Cumberland, on Monday from 7 to 9 p.m. and Tuesday from 11 a.m. until noon.

The funeral service will be conducted in the funeral home on Tuesday at noon with the Rev. Thomas Young officiating.

Interment will be in Hillcrest Memorial Park.
