— TOWSON — Dorothy Fern (Frye) Novak, 82, of Towson, formerly of Adelphi, died Sunday, April 21, 2013 at Edenwald.

Born Aug. 5, 1930 in Rio, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late Charles Edward Frye Sr. and Madge Virginia (Heishman) Frye.

She was also preceded in death by a son-in-law, John D. Maple; and two sisters, Jessie Frye and Mary Frye Hoke.

Fern was a graduate of Capon Bridge High School and Marion College. She majored in Home Economics at Shepherd College.

On March 22, 1951, she married Fred M. Novak.

Before starting her family, she taught Home Economics at Lisbon High School. After her daughters were grown, she returned to work at A.P.W.U. as an insurance claims processor.

Fern was a member of St. Stephen’s Lutheran Church.  

Survivors include her loving husband of 62 years, Fred M. Novak. She was a devoted mother to her two daughters, Peggy N. Maple, White Hall and Wendy N. Upchurch and husband Gary, Ridgeley, W.Va. She was lovingly known as “Mom-Mom” to her four grandchildren, Amy R. Tootle and husband Brian, Lewes, Del., J. Scott Maple, Timonium,  David M. Maple and wife Jamie, New York, N.Y., and Kelly J. Upchurch-Kozlowski and husband Kyle, Natick, Mass.; and to her great-granddaughter, Peyton Olivia Tootle. Fern has two brothers, Charles E. Frye Jr. and wife Phyllis, Winston-Salem, N.C., and Richard Frye, Rio; two sisters, Charlotte M. Bradfield, Rio, and Clara Margaret Brill and husband Clyde, Yellow Springs, W.Va.; and nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.

Friends will be received at the Upchurch Funeral Home, P.A., 202 Greene St., Cumberland, on Saturday, April 27,  2013 from 2 to 4 p.m. The funeral service will follow at 4:30 p.m. in the funeral home.

There will be a private interment at the Rio Cemetery.
