GOFF M. TURNER [Grantsville]

GRANTSVILLE — Goff Manley Turner, 87, died peacefully at the Goodwill Mennonite Nursing Home in Grantsville, on Friday, Oct. 11, 2013.

Born Aug. 9, 1926 at home in Clarksburg, W.Va., he was the son of the late Forest Guy Turner and Roxie Ellen (Garvin) Bloomgarden.

In addition to his parents, Mr. Turner was preceded in death by two sons-in-law, Douglas G. Buckalew Sr. and Robert Varkonda; as well as two grandchildren, Brian M. Varkonda and infant Ginny Marie Buckalew.

Goff is survived by his wife of nearly 60 years, Elizabeth “Betty” Ann (Hurley) Turner; children, Debbie Varkonda, Short Gap, W.Va.,  Becky Brady and husband Pat, Morgantown, W.Va., Roxanne Buckalew, Cumberland, and Gary Turner and wife Cheryl, Corriganville; seven grandchildren, Beth Nightengale and husband Tim, Cresaptown, Josh Brady and wife Courtney, and Grayson Brady, all of Morgantown, Cheray Buckalew and fiancé Bill Moran, Cumberland, Douglas G. Buckalew Jr. and fiancé Shannon Bryner, Lexington Park,  Forrest Turner and Hannah Turner, Corriganville; and, five great-grandchildren, Madison and Bryce Nightengale, Cresaptown, Alexus Varkonda, Oklahoma, Brody Buckalew, Cumberland, and Connor and Audrey Brady, Morgantown.

Mr. Turner was a 1943 graduate of Roosevelt Wilson High School in Clarksburg. Goff started working at the young age of 13 delivering medicine on his bicycle. After graduation, he worked for Otis Elevators, was a salesman for the Sell Company, and a delivery man for Wilson Bakery before he started his salesman career with Custom Carpets in Clarksburg. After some time with Custom Carpets, he was promoted to manager and was then selected to open and operate the Custom Carpets’ location in LaVale. He retired after 25 years. Goff then worked with his son, Gary, at Wood Chips Custom Cabinets in Corriganville.

The true passion in Goff’s life was “playing trains” as an avid model railroader. He spent hours upon hours in his own train room in the basement of his home. He ran his own track, created his own scenery, and even built and rebuilt his own trains. Goff was a proud founding member of the MD-WV Train Club. He traveled near and far to train shows with his train buddies. Goff had a standing train day visit with his model railroad companion, George Perrine, of Oakland for many years. One of his favorite sayings was “My wife says if I buy one more train, she will leave me. I will really miss her!” Playing trains was certainly his greatest hobby.

Goff was a Jehovah’s Witness and attended meetings at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses in McCoole and Cumberland.

A memorial service will be held at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses, Mc-Coole, MD on Sunday, October 20, 2013 at 3:00 PM.

The family respectfully requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to either Memory Lane at the Goodwill Mennonite Nursing Home, 891 Dorsey Hotel Road, Grants-ville, MD 21536 or the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses, Route 220, McMullen Hwy, SW, McCoole, MD 21562.

Condolences to the family may be posted after Mr. Turner’s obituary at www.upchurchfh.com.
