— CUMBERLAND — Donald “Don” Joseph Helmstetter, 76, of Cumberland, passed away at Western Maryland Regional Medical Center on Wednesday, Oct. 23, 2013.

Born April 25, 1937 in Cumberland, he was the son of the late Clement Joseph and Mary Frances (Barley) Helmstetter.

Don graduated from LaSalle High School in 1955; he served our Country in the Army from 1960-1962; he retired from the United States Postal Service after thirty five years of service as a mail carrier; he was devoted to the Helmstetter Family farm and his Church, St. Ambrose. For many years he served St. Ambrose as an Usher, a Parish Council member, and maintaining the building, grounds, road, parking lot and cemetery as a volunteer.

Surviving is his wife, Brenda “Sue” Helmstetter, Cumberland; two sons, Thomas Lynn Helmstetter and wife Deena, Cumberland, and Mark Lee Helmstetter and wife Tonya, Ashburn,Va.; two sisters, Ann Stahlman and husband Glenn, Cumberland, and Rose Marie Armbruster, Cumberland; two brothers, Clement Helmstetter and wife Judy, Cumberland and John Helmstetter, Cumberland; and two grandchildren, Ethan Thomas and Noah Lee Helmstetter, Cumberland.

As per his wishes, he will be cremated.

Friends will be received at the Scarpelli Funeral Home, P. A. (, Cresaptown on Friday, Oct. 25, from 5 until 8 p.m. A Christian Wake Service will be held at 7:30 p.m.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Ambrose Catholic Church, Cresaptown on Saturday, Oct. 26 at 10 a.m. with Fr. Steve Fernandes, O.F.M., Cap. as celebrant.  

 Private burial will be in Restlawn Memorial Gardens.
