MARY E. “LIBBY” (STRAW) MALAMPHY [Cumberland]

CUMBERLAND — Mary Elizabeth “Libby” (Straw) Malamphy, 81, of Cumberland, passed away Monday, Oct. 28, 2013, at her home after a lengthy illness.

Born Jan, 7, 1932, in Cumberland, Mrs. Malamphy was the daughter of the late William C. Straw Sr., and Mary O. (Wisman) Straw.  She was also preceded in death by her husband of 43 years, Hugh Felix Malamphy, Jan. 30, 2011.

A graduate of Allegany High School, class of 1949, Mary graduated from the State Teacher’s College at Frostburg and was named to Who’s Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges. She received her Master of Arts from Colombia University, New York. Mary served in the Allegany County School System as a teacher at LaVale Elementary School, as teacher/principal at Ellerslie School and principal at the Mount Royal School. She then served as a supervisor of elementary education for Allegany County from 1963 to 1983. Mary was a member of the Delta Kappa Gamma Society International ETA Chapter; the National Society of Colonial Dames, Elizabeth Hundred Chapter; and the Maryland Retired Teachers Association of Allegany County.  

After retirement, Mary taught at Frostburg State University in the Education Department. She also studied painting and jewelry design. An avid traveler, Mary visited many countries on four continents.  

Mary is survived by her brother, William C. Straw Jr. and his wife, Carolyn, Cumberland; as well as numerous friends, cousins, nieces, nephews, grandnieces, grandnephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews.  

Friends will be received at the Adams Family Funeral Home, P.A., 404 Decatur St., Cumberland,  (www.AdamsFamilyFuneralHome.com) on Thursday, Oct. 31, 2013 from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m.   

A memorial service will be conducted at the funeral home on Thursday, Oct. 31, 2013 at 1 p.m.

The family expresses special thanks to Mary’s caregivers Midge, Anne, Betty, Donna, Jeri, Mary, Patty, and Shirley.

The family requests memorial contributions be made to the Children’s Literature Centre at Frostburg University, 101 Braddock Road, Frostburg, MD 21532.
