ALVIN K. “AL” PERSONS [Cumberland]

Together Again

CUMBERLAND — Alvin Kay “Al” Persons, 80, of Cumberland, formerly of Frostburg, passed peacefully Thursday, Oct. 31, 2013, at the Frostburg Village Nursing Home after a long struggle with Alzheimers disease. He joins his wife, Floellen “Flo ” N. (Stafford) Persons in heaven who preceded him in death on Feb. 8, 2007, after 53 years of marriage.   

Born in Hallettsville, Texas, on Nov. 10, 1932, Al was raised and went to school in Yoakum, Texas. He was the son of the late Mary Edith (Evans) and Charles Alvin Persons.  

He later worked as an Installer Repairman for the C&P Telephone Company, Bell Atlantic, and retired from Verizon, in Cumberland. He provided wonderful service to his customers and never left a job unfinished no matter how long it took. His job was important to him and he took pride in his work. He was a member of Mt. Hermon United Methodist Church.  At the church, he had served as a Sunday School teacher, Trustee, and member of the church choir with his wife. He was a Marine Corps veteran of the Korean War. As a marine he fought in the Battle of Chosin Reservoir and became one of the “Chosin Few”. He was a member of the Frostburg American Legion.  A bowler, Al bowled at Sherwood Bowling Lanes in Frostburg, the Bowler, and White Oaks.  A musician, Al played guitar in a local Blue Grass Band where they traveled and played at local nursing homes. Al also loved the outdoors and camped at Big Bear Lake with his family, and was an amateur photographer. He loved going to Lindy’s Restaurant with his wife. The family would like to thank Lindy’s for all their wonderful service and kindness.

Al and Flo met on a train while traveling from Texas. During that three day journey, they fell in love, and were later married on July 14, 1954.

He is survived by three daughters, Cynthia K. Snyder and husband Ron of LaVale, Peggy L. Scarpelli and husband John, Frostburg, and Sheila M. Ricker and husband Terry, LaVale; one son, John C. Persons and wife Karen, Cumberland; 12 grandchildren, Mickey C. McGeady, Ridgeley, W.Va., John T. McGeady and wife Keisha, Rawlings, Justin T. Scarpelli, LaVale, Leah M. Scarpelli, Washington, D..C, Matthew P. Scarpelli, Short Gap, W.Va., Seth A. Ricker, LaVale, Brianna L. Persons, Cumberland, Austin J. Persons, Oldtown, Krysten E. Snyder, LaVale, Rachel L. Scarpelli, Frostburg, Jenna E. Snyder, Frederick, and Julia Grace Persons, Cumberland; five great-grandchildren, Brennan T. McGeady, Liam W. McGeady, both of Finzel, Owen T. McGeady, Declan C. McGeady, Rawlings, Adina R. Scarpelli, Westminster; and a great-granddaughter due in December; a sister, Marguarite Denton, Fort Worth, Texas; nieces, Anita and Susan and their families. He is also survived by a very special cousin, Eula Mae Ford and husband Phillip, Yoakum, Texas.

The family would like to thank the Frostburg Village Nursing Home as well as Dr. Sidhu for the care, love and support during his stay. God bless you all.

Our dad was a humble and honorable man proud of his roots and extremely proud of his family. He loved the Lord with all his heart. Thank you dad for always being there and always loving us.

Friends will be received at the Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A., 108 Virginia Ave., Cumberland, (www.scarpellifh.com) on Wednesday, Nov. 6, 2013 from 5 to 8 p.m.

 A funeral service will be conducted at the funeral home on Thursday, Nov. 7, 2013 at 1 p.m. with the Rev. Fred Iser officiating.  

Interment will be in Sunset Memorial Park. Military honors will be accorded by Post 13 Veteran’s Honor Guard.

Pallbearers will be grandsons, Mickey McGeady, John McGeady, Justin Scarpelli, Matthew Scarpelli, Seth Ricker and Austin Persons.
