— PAW PAW, W.Va. — Glenn Frederick (Fred) Shanholtzer, 70, of Paw Paw, died Tuesday March 12, 2013 at his home in Paw Paw.

Born Dec. 30, 1942, he was the son of the late O. Glenn and Lillian (Caudle) Shanholtzer of East Greenbush, N.Y. In addition to his parents, Dr. Shanholtzer was also preceded in death by an infant granddaughter.

Fred spent most of his adult life in Basking Ridge, N.J., Tucker, Ga. and Stuart, Fla., before moving to Paw Paw, in 2007. After graduating from Columbia High School in East Greenbush, he studied biology and ecology and received a Bachelor’s degree from Hope College (Michigan), a Master’s degree from Florida State University, and a PhD from the University of Georgia. Most of his career was spent as a lead biologist for engineering and consulting companies. He grew up attending Trinity United Methodist Church in Albany, N.Y. He was member of Bishop James UMC in Basking Ridge, and Tucker First UMC in Tucker. Dr. Shanholtzer was an avid bird watcher and nature photographer. He loved the serenity of his mountain home in West Virginia. He enjoyed sports his entire life and spent many years on the tennis court. He also enjoyed filming performances at the Barn Theater in Stuart, Fla.

He is survived by his daughter, Robin Shanholtzer Paulman and her husband, Justin, of Cumberland; and his son, L. Glenn Shanholtzer and his wife, Stephanie, of Tucker. He is also survived by his sister, Elizabeth Henze, of Delmar, N.Y.; his ex-wife, Sheryl Fanning Shanholtzer; and three grandchildren, Aidan Paulman, and William and Lauren Shanholtzer.

A memorial service will be held July 27, 2013 at Emmanuel Episcopal Church in Cumberland, MD. Scarpelli Funeral Home is coordinating the service.
