BENJAMIN T. SHAFFER [Cumberland]

CUMBERLAND — Benjamin T. Shaffer, 82, of Cumberland, formerly of Ridgeley, W.Va., died Monday, Sept. 9, 2013 at The Golden Living Center.

Born Sept. 6, 1931 in Morgantown, W.Va., he was the son of the late Ezra Taylor Shaffer and Viola Virginia (VanVerth) Shaffer.

He was also preceded in death by a brother, Larry Vaughn Shaffer.

Mr. Shaffer served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict.

Mr. Shaffer had owned and operated Colonial Parking. He was retired from Harris Teeter in Charlotte, N.C. where he was a Front End Manager. Benjamin was a “people person”, that’s why he loved his job at WalMart! His hobby was helping everybody!

He was a Past Exalted Ruler for Lodge 63, B.P.O.E., Cumberland and former member of William E. Shuck Jr. Post 136, American Legion.

Survivors include his wife of 61 years, Emily Lenora (Butler) Shaffer; three children, Linda Shaffer Lindner and husband Louis, Carpendale, W.Va., Donna Shaffer Betthauser and husband Jim, Alexandria, Va., and Cheryl Shaffer Rice and husband Jerry, Cresaptown; a brother, Richard Shaffer and wife Susan, Palm Beach, Fla.; a sister, Sandra Shaffer Miller and husband Jim, LaVale; 12 grandchildren, Melanie, Kelly, Sean, Brandon, Michael, Corina, Dana, Dustin, Krystina, Patrick, Taylor, and Alexis; six great-grandchildren, Cameron, Logan, Blake, Georgia, Kyle, and Erin; and several nieces and nephews.

Friends will be received at the Upchurch Funeral Home, P.A., 202 Greene St., Cumberland, on Thursday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.

The funeral service will be conducted in the funeral home on Friday at 1 p.m. with the Rev. Bernadette Ross officiating.

Interment will be in Maryland State Veterans Cemetery at Rocky Gap, where military honors will be accorded by Post 13 Veterans Honor Guard.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, 108 Byte Drive, Suite 103, Frederick, MD  21702.
