STEPHEN P. KARA [Fort Ashby, W.Va.]

FORT ASHBY, W.Va. — Stephen P. Kara, 77, of Fort Ashby, W.Va., passed away on Thursday, Feb. 21, 2013, at the Country House for Impaired Memory in Cumberland.

Born May 25, 1935, in Franklin, N.J., he was the son of the late Stephen and Helen (Zagyi) Kara.

Mr. Kara was a United States Air Force veteran and served for ten years, both active and inactive, in Germany and Newfoundland. He was a member of the Annunciation of Our Lord Catholic Church, the Fort Ashby Lions Club where he received the highest honor in Lionism, the Melvin Jones Fellow Award. He was also a member of the American Legion and the Veterans of Foreign Wars. Stephen was Past Grand Knight at the Knights of Columbus, Pope John XXIII Council 5450, past Faithful Navigator of the Fourth Degree. He was retired after thirty-three years of service with the Food and Drug Administration as Program and Budget Director for the Division of Toxicology. He attended Rutgers, American, Catholic and George Mason Universities with degrees in Budgeting and Financial Management.  

Surviving are his wife Peggy; his daughters, Lisa, of Staunton Va. and Paula, of Alexandria Va. and a niece, Terry Nguyen, of Englewood, Fla.

Friends will be received at the Scarpelli Funeral Home P.A., 108 Virginia Ave., Cumberland, on Sunday from 5 to 8 p.m.  A Christian Wake service will be conducted at the funeral home on Sunday at 7 p.m. Following the Christian Wake service, a memorial service will be conducted by the Fort Ashby Lions Club.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated in the Annunciation of Our Lord Catholic Church, Fort Ashby, on Monday at 10 a.m. with Father Mike Lecias as celebrant.

Interment will be in Fort Ashby Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be provided by the Fourth Degree Color Corps. Honorary pallbearers will be John Tipping, Doug Long, Bernard Douthitt, Roger Henry, Joe Dodrill and Bob Miltenberger.

Military honors will be accorded by the Post 13 Veterans Honor Guard.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Country House for Impaired Memory, 15 Cumberland St., Cumberland MD 21502 or Lewy Body Dementia Association, 912 Killian Hill Road S.W., Lilburn, GA 30047.
