DR. EDWIN A. HELMSTETTER [Potlatch, Idaho]

POTLATCH, Idaho — Dr. Edwin A. Helmstetter, 65, of Potlatch, formally of Rawlings, passed away Tuesday, Nov. 5, 2013, at Virginia Mason Medical Center, Seattle, Wash., from complications related to pancreatic cancer.

Ed was born Jan. 12, 1948, in Cumberland, to the late Ferman J. Helmstetter and Mae C. (Clinedist) Helmstetter. He was also preceded in death by an infant sister, Barbara Jean Helmstetter in 1950; nephew, Donald R. Helmstetter, in 2013; father-in-law, Alfred Curry and mother in-law, Flora Curry.

A graduate of Allegany High School, class of 1966, Ed played football, basketball and was a member of the track team. After graduation he completed four years of study at the University of Maryland. Ed then continued his studies and received his Doctorate (Ph.D.) in special education at the University of Kansas in 1985.

Edwin served as chair and taught for 27 years in the department of Teaching and Learning at Washington State University. During Ed's teaching career at WSU, he and his family resided in Moscow, Idaho. Upon retiring, the family move to Potlach, to enjoy their new home that Ed designed and built. An avid outdoorsman, his favorite adventure was climbing Mount Rainer in 2003 with his two sons.

Edwin will be sadly missed by his loving wife, Chris Curry; his two sons, Preston and Nolan and his beloved dog, Sundown. He is also survived by and will be sadly missed by his sisters, Eva Mae Lloyd, of Fort Meyers, Fla., Janet Riley and husband Mike, of Columbus, Ohio; brothers, Donald Helmstetter and Glenda Welsh, of Cresaptown/Bel Air and John Helmstetter and wife Margaret, of LaVale; sister-in-law, Linda Herbert and husband Kenneth, of Costa Mesa, Calif.; brother-in-law, Steven Curry and wife Sonia, of Tucson, Ariz. as well as many nieces and nephews.

A private burial, on the Helmstetter family plot, and prayer service was held Nov. 7, 2013.

A memorial service in Ed's honor will be held in The Shrine of SS Peter & Paul, 125 Fayette St., Cumberland, at a later date.
