CATHERINE O. SHOUP [Frostburg]

Cumberland Times-News

— FROSTBURG — Catherine Oleta Shoup, 101 years young, of Frostburg, passed away on Friday, Sept. 6, 2013 at her home.

Born Jan. 9, 1912, in Cumberland, Catherine was the daughter of the late Edward L. and Ada (Workman) Col-lins. She was also preceded in death by her husband, John L. Shoup in 1980; and her brothers Vernon and Elwood Collins.

Catherine was a devoted wife, mother, homemaker, and during the war, a valued employee of the Celanese Fiber Corporation. She was a longtime member of the Christ United Methodist Church. Catherine loved her family and was proud of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren. Over the years she traveled back and forth to Florida, Texas, and South Carolina to visit with family and when home in Cumberland, enjoyed hosting visits from loved ones in her home. She celebrated her 90th birthday with a new car purchase and surprise dinner party in Houston, Texas. Her 97th birthday included a surprise party in Panama City, Fla. and on Jan. 9, 2012, she was greeted by a big bold “Happy 100th” message on the marquis at Geatz’s restaurant where family and friends honored her with a special birthday celebration. The Frostburg Fire Department surprised her too with a “100” sign outside the station!

She stayed active and attended a family meal at a local restaurant the day before her death. Catherine's daily routine always started the same...she would wake up and ask "Where are we going today?”

She is survived by one daughter, Norma Lee (Shoup) Barnes; one son, Edward Shoup and wife Peggy; grandchildren, David Barnes, Julie Miller and husband Fred, Diane Nelson, Susan Barnes, Mark Barnes and wife Joy, Beth Thurlow and husband James, Sharon McKinley, Amy Mellon and husband Matt, Julie Shoup and special friend Deren Cole, Jill Shoup and special friend Seth Lasher; great-grandchildren, Delanie Melon, Rylie Mellon, Gracy Wilhelm, Bryan Wil-helm, Christopher Miller, Jon Miller, Mark Miller, Michelle Holley, Joshua Holley, Mike Nelson, Rachel Barnes, Hannah Barnes, Brandon Thurlow and Haley Thurlow; great-great-grandchildren, Katlynn Whitmire and Jayden Bolling; two special nephews, Gregory Collins and Kenny Shoup and wife Sue; two special nieces, Joyce Ann Scrader, and Cora Louise Corley.

“Grandma Shoup” will be sadly missed but happily remembered by family and friends. We thank the Lord for bringing her home peacefully, without illness or pain.

Friends will be received at the Scarpelli Funeral Home P.A. (www.scarpellifh.com), 108 Virginia Ave., Cumberland on Friday, Sept. 13, 2013 from 7 to 9 p.m.

Interment will be in Sunset Memorial Park.
