JAMES D. ECKARD [Cumberland]

CUMBERLAND — James D. Eckard, 82, of Cumberland, passed away on Wednesday, May 1, 2013, at the Western Maryland Health System.

Born in Cumberland on Jan. 11, 1931, he was the son of the late Jack E. and Ruth (Kelso) Eckard. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, JoAnn (Taylor) Eckard and one brother, Jack E. “Beef” Eckard Jr.  

Jim graduated from Fort Hill High School in 1949. While in high school, he was a member of the basketball and baseball teams. Following high school, Jim played minor league baseball for the Detroit Tigers organization. He later graduated from Frostburg State University, receiving his Bachelors Degree and then his Masters Degree.

Jim was a United States Army veteran of the Korean Conflict and was a Physical Education teacher at Fort Hill High School until his retirement in 1986. While at Fort Hill, he was the varsity men’s basketball and baseball coach. A member of New Covenant United Methodist Church, Jim was a former member of the Kingsley United Methodist Church. He was a former member of the Cumberland Recreation Board, the Cumberland Outdoor Club, the American Legion Fort Cumberland Post 13, the VFW Henry Post 1411 and Maplehurst Country Club.

He is survived by his son, J. Michael Eckard and wife Terri, of New Market; two grandchildren, James D. Eckard, a student at the University of Maryland and Paige L. Eckard, a student at Virginia Tech; one brother, William H. Eckard, of Cumberland and one niece, Dr. Sandy Eckard.

Friends will be received at the Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A., 108 Virginia Ave. (www.scarpellifh.com) on Thursday, May 16, 2013, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.  

A funeral service will be conducted in the funeral home on Friday, May 17, 2013, at 11 a.m.  

Interment will be in Sunset Memorial Park

Military honors will be afforded by American Legion Post 13.
