JONAS B. “MIKE” WALKER [Grantsville]

GRANTSVILLE — Jonas Beachy “Mike” Walker, 84, of Grantsville, died Sunday, June 9, 2013 at the Western Maryland Regional Medical Center, Cumberland.

Born Nov. 7, 1928, in Salisbury, Pa., he was the son of the late Harry and Orpha (Beachy) Walker.

Mr. Walker was a Supervising Engineer for the U.S. Department of Energy, Germantown, retiring after 32 years of service. He was a U.S. Navy veteran, where he served on ships patrolling from Cuba to South America. He was a member of St. John’s United Church of Christ, Salisbury, Woodmen of the World Camp 41, Grantsville and a lifetime member of Earl H. Opel, Post 459, Salisbury and Walker-Harris Post 8826, Salisbury.

He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Joanne L. (Younkin) Walker, whom he married on Nov. 27, 1957; a son, John M. Walker, Washington, D.C.; four brothers, Sam Walker, Ursina, Pa., Jack Walker and William “Bim” Walker, both of Salisbury, Jim Walker, Grantsville; a sister, Frances Engle, Claysville, Pa.; sister and brother-in-law, Ken and Janet Wable, Salisbury; a nephew and niece, Scott and Stacy Wable; and a number of other nieces and nephews.

A memorial services will be held on Sunday, June 23, 2013 at 1 p.m. at the St. John’s United Church of Christ with James Walker and Irene Heckman officiating.

Interment will be held in the Salisbury Cemetery. Military graveside rites will be accorded by local area veteran’s organizations.

Newman Funeral Homes, P.A., 179 Miller St., Grantsville, is in charge of arrangements.
