HOWARD O. HOVATTER [Cumberland]

CUMBERLAND — Howard Oswin (Hoagie) Hovatter, 87, of Cumberland, passed away peacefully on Saturday, June 22, 2013, surrounded by his loving family.  

Born Nov. 21, 1925, in Cumberland, he was the son of the late Margaret (Kenney) Hovatter and D. Ward Hovatter.  

Howard was preceded in death by his first wife of 33 years, Norma Lee (Davis) Hovatter who died in 1983, and his second wife of six years, Patricia (Reckley) Hovatter, who died in 2000, three brothers; Ward Hovatter, Leo (Tag) Hovatter and Robert Ralph Hovatter.

Howard was a Veteran and served in the United States Army Air Corps in World War II. Howard retired after 36 years as an Engineer for CSX and continued working as an Engineer for the Western Maryland Scenic Railroad for another 18 years.  Howard was a very proud lifelong resident of South Cumberland, a member of the Knights of Columbus, American Legion and St. Mary’s Catholic Church of Our Lady of the Mountains Parish.  

He is survived by his daughter, Mary M. Merrill and husband Gene of Brunswick, Ohio; sons, John J. Hovatter, Cumberland, Don J. Hovatter and partner, Mahlon Bickford, Unity, Maine, Neal L. Hovatter and wife Annette, Odenton; brother, James Hovatter and wife Shirley, Forrest Lake, Minn.; a step-daughter, Joy A. Reckley-Murphy and spouse Faith Murphy, ten grandchildren and four great-grandchildren, numerous nieces, and nephews, and a best friend of 81 years; James (Streaky) Clark whom he visited faithfully until just a few weeks ago.

A very special thank you goes to the Kensington–Alguonquin for their love and care of our father and also to the Staff at Moran Manor and 7-South at the Western Maryland Regional Health Center.  

Friends will be received at the Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A., 108 Virginia Ave., Cumberland, (www.scarpellifh.com) on Tuesday, June 25, 2013, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. A Christian Wake service will be held Tuesday, June 25, 2013, at 3:30 p.m.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at Our Lady of Mountains Parish St. Mary’s  Catholic Church on Wednesday, June 26, 2013, at 10 a.m., with Father Greg Chervenak officiating.

Interment will be in Saint Mary’s Cemetery.

Military Honors will be accorded by Post 13 Honor Guard.  

In lieu of flowers, contributions can be sent to the Lady of the Mountains Parish St. Mary’s Catholic Church at 201 North Centre St., Cumberland, 21502.
