PAUL D. GROWDEN [Cumberland]

CUMBERLAND — Paul Dean Growden, 74, of Cumberland, went to be with our Lord on Wednesday, March 12, 2014, at home surrounded by his family after battling several illnesses.

Born Feb. 21, 1940 in Centerville, Pa., Mr. Growden was the son of the late Frances Growden and Vera May (Boor) Growden. He was also preceded in death by three brothers, Johnny, Alton, and Eddie Growden.

Paul was a 1958 graduate of Bedford High School. While at Bedford, he played football and baseball. He was a United States Army Veteran.

Paul worked as a Police Officer for the City of Cumberland for 30 years until his retirement. He most enjoyed working the school crossing at West Side School. Beneath his tough exterior, he was a loving and caring person that was willing to give you the shirt off his back.

Paul was a member at Christ United Methodist Church, Centerville Senior Citizen, and Northwind Golf Association. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, golfing, working on race cars, building bird houses and giving them to others. He coached Dapper Dan, Hot Stove, and Rec League Teams. Paul was known for working on the Greenway Avenue football field for many years calling in the yardage and downs to the press box. What he most enjoyed was cheering his grandsons on at their sporting events.

Paul is survived by his wife of 47 years, Nora (Gillum) Growden; one son, Roger D. Growden and wife, Karen, Bowling Green; two daughters, Paula D. Lowery and husband, Brad, Ellerslie, Nicole D. Growden, Cumberland; a special nephew, Norman F. Growden who was like a "son.” He also leaves behind a brother, Roger N. "Peanut" Growden and wife, Velma, Austin, Texas; a sister, Shirley L. Griffith, Cumberland Valley, Pa., and the joys of his life his; two grandsons, Steven A. Lowery and Lucas B. Lowery. Paul also had many nieces and nephews that were very near and dear to his heart.

At Paul’s request, his body was donated to the Maryland Anatomy Board. Friends will be received at the Adams Family Funeral Home, P.A., 404 Decatur St., Cumberland, (www.AdamsFamilyFuneralHome.com) on Friday, March 14, 2014, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.

A memorial service will be conducted at Christ United Methodist Church on Saturday, March 15, 2014, at 11 a.m., with the Rev. Harold R. McClay, Jr., officiating. The family will also receive friends at the church one hour prior to the service.

The family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to the Hospice Staff, especially Kris, LaDonna, Jane, and Kim for all their help.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Paul’s name to Christ United Methodist Church, 400 Race Street, Cumberland, MD 21502; or, the WMHS Home Hospice Program, 1050 West Industrial Boulevard, Cumberland, MD 21502.
