R. WAYNE HUDSON [Cumberland]

CUMBERLAND — R. Wayne Hudson, 77, of Cumberland, took his last breath on earth and first breath in Heaven at 8:55 a.m. at Western Maryland Regional Medical Center on Saturday, Oct. 6, 2012 surrounded by his family.

Born January 10, 1935, in Cumberland, he was the son of the late Wilbur and Ethel (Bolinger) Hudson.  Wayne was born the eleventh of eighteen children.  He was preceded in death by his brothers: Lester, Robert, Calvin and Jerry; his sisters; Veva, Dorothea, Clara, Geraldine, Mary Alice, Patricia and Libby.  Wayne was also preceded in death by three infant grandsons, in 1979, 1981 and Bennie Powell, Jr. in 1982.

Wayne was a lifetime member of Second Baptist Church and attended Fort Hill High School.  He was the former owner of Tri-State Oxygen, having sold the business in 1991 due to health issues.  Once Wayne was able he put his many talents and skills to work helping others. You could find him with many different tools in his hands or on the riding lawnmower. Doing things for his family, friends and neighbors was one of his greatest rewards, never expecting anything in return.  No matter what time of the day or night, he was always willing to help. He was also preceded in death by his close friend Ron Nave.

Wayne had a heart of giving and the gift of humor. Memories of picking strawberries, flying kites, catching fireflies and throwing firecrackers on the neighbor’s roofs are abundant among family members. When family came to visit, he would rather play with the nieces and nephews than be with the adults.

In his younger days, Wayne loved to hunt and fish. He was an avid Fort Hill Sentinels, Washington Redskins and, Pittsburgh Pirates fan, but most recently Wayne loved to watch and attend NHRA events. Fast Jack Beckman was his favorite driver and family friend, having grown up with the Beckman family in Mapleside. Still residing in the family home, Wayne played an important part in the care of his mother Ethel and his sister Libby whom he loved deeply.

Wayne was a foster parent for eighteen years, being a positive influence on fifty plus lives. Some of those girls still maintained contact with their Dad Hudson.

Wayne is survived by his wife of thirty-three years, Wanetta (Leslie) Hudson; his daughters, Debbie Powell and companion Jim Portmess, who he thought of as a son, Short Gap, Cathy Wilson and husband Sam of Cumberland, and Sarah Hudson, Essex; three stepdaughters, Theresa Carter and husband Hal, Alabama, Tori Mosher and Karen Spiker, of Cumberland; stepson Buck Kesler and companion Sue Bois, Cumberland. Wayne also leaves behind his granddaughters Aimee Powell and fiancé Ricky Cook, with whom he was was anxiously awaiting the arrival of his twin great-grandsons, Rydin and Zandir due shortly, Wiley Ford and Amanda Lynn Wilson, Cumberland. Also surviving are his brothers, Gene, Colorado and Ronald, Miss.; his sisters, Julia Orndoff, Leta Neus, Diane Hudson, Cumberland and Maxine Dorr, Mo.; his special babies, Shane, Dalton and Lillyawnna; six step-grandchildren and six step-great grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews and a special niece and nephew, Peggy Hudson, Virginia and  Paul Hudson, Baltimore, who visited their Uncle Wayne frequently.

Friends will be received at the Scarpelli Funeral Home, 108 Virginia Ave., (www.scarpellifh.com) on Monday from 6 to 8 p.m. and Tuesday, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Services will be conducted following the visitation on Tuesday at 1 p.m.  with the Rev. Benny Brakeall, his lifelong friend, officiating.

As per his wishes, he will be cremated.

He will be laid to rest with his mother at Greenmount Cemetery, Cumberland at a later date.
