GEORGE T. SLIGER JR. [Westernport]

WESTERNPORT — George T. Sliger Jr., formerly of Westernport, died on Saturday, June 22, 2013, at the Veteran’s Administration Respite Care Unit in Martinsburg, W.Va., where he had been a patient since April.

Prior to becoming a resident there, he was a patient at Egle Nursing and Rehab in Lonaconing, for a year.

George was born on Nov. 8, 1918, in Westernport. He was the son of the late George T. Sliger Sr. and Blanche (Kalbaugh) Sliger. He was also preceded in death by his brother, Charles R. (Pete) Sliger Sr.

He is survived by his niece, Sue A. Raines and husband Wayne and his nephew, Charles R. Sliger Jr. and wife Diane. He is also survived by his great-nephews, Charles R. Sliger III, Brendan L. Sliger and Joseph D. Raines and his great-niece, Jennifer L. Raines and a special friend, Tony Arnone.

George was a 1937 graduate of Bruce High School and attended Potomac State College. He is a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, serving his country for five years. He attained the rank of Master Sergeant in the Army Signal Corps. He served in the CBI in both China and India with the 245th Signal Operations Company. He was employed by the West Virginia Pulp and Paper Company. He retired from the Celanese Corporation with 35 years of service.

George was a lifelong member of Saint James Episcopal Church in Westernport. He was a member of the American Legion, Victory Post 155, the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Queen Point Memorial Post 6775, Hiram Lodge No. 103 and the Scottish Rite Bodies of Cumberland.

George was an avid golfer, and was a member of the Maplehurst Country Club in Frostburg and Lakeview Country Club in Morgantown, W.Va. He enjoyed many hobbies including hunting, fishing, archery, woodworking, tinkering with his cars, collecting clocks and horse racing. George enjoyed life in large part due to the many friends he made along the way.

Friends will be received at the Fredlock Funeral Home in Piedmont, W.Va., on Friday, June 28, from 6 to 8 p.m.

A funeral service will be conducted in the funeral home on Saturday, June 29, at 10 a.m. with Deacon Harold Bradley officiating.

Interment will be at Philos Cemetery in Westernport.

The family request that memorials for George be directed to the Tri-Towns Rescue or Potomac Fire Co.
