CUMBERLAND — Joan Frances Carolan, 89, of Cumberland, passed away on Friday, Dec. 21, 2012.
Born May 14, 1923, in Westernport, Joan was the daughter of the late Thomas Wilson and Veronica Stowell Kenney. Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Philip Terence Carolan; her brother, Thomas Kenney; sister-in law, Shirley Kenney; brother-in law, Chauncey Friend and grandchildren Thad Carolan and Ivy Hoffman.
She was a member of Our Lady of the Mountains, Saint Patrick’s Parish.
Joan was a graduate of St. Peter’s School in Westernport and Catherman’s Business School. She worked at Celanese Corporation and Kelly Springfield, where she met her husband Phil. She and her husband co-owned and operated Phil’s Tavern. She also worked for and retired from the Allegany County Liquor Board.
Surviving are children Terry and Diane Carolan, Denny and Mary Ann Carolan, Jan and Keith Hoffman, Greg Carolan and Trudy and Tom Reinauer; grandchildren Fred and Missy Carolan, Nova Carolan, Emmett Carolan, Julia Carolan, Tate and Kathy Hoffman, Reid Hoffman, Whit Reinauer and Hayley Reinauer; great-grandchildren Liam Hoffman and Ada Hoffman; siblings Rose Marie Friend, Gene and Carol Kenney and many nieces and nephews.
Joan loved spending time with her immediate and extended family, especially holiday meals where the family assembled in her dining room, with grandchildren underfoot and the day ended with a group picture in front of the living room mantel. She was a lifelong football fan, especially the Washington Redskins and the University of Notre Dame. From the time she was married in St. Augustine, Fla., the beach was always a source of joy. She especially loved Daytona, where she spent many vacations with various members of the family.
She was a past member of the Allegany County Democratic Central Committee and the Democratic Women’s Club. She worked for many party candidates and was passionate about her political views.
Joan and Phil bred show dogs and were past members of the Upper Potomac Valley Kennel Club. Her home was always open to family, friends and of course, their dogs.
She will be remembered as a small statured lady with a strong will, who was fiercely loyal to her family and her church. She had a huge heart.
Friends will be received at the Scarpelli Funeral Home P.A., 108 Virginia Ave., Cumberland, on Thursday, Dec. 27, 2012, from 3 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. A Christian wake service will be conducted on Thursday at 8:30 p.m. by Deacon Frank Werner.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated in Our Lady of the Mountains Saint Patrick’s Catholic Church on Friday, Dec. 28, 2012, at 10 a.m. with Father Bernard Finerty, O.F.M. Cap officiating.
Interment will be in St. Patrick’s Cemetery.
