FROSTBURG — Pat Souders went to go fishing in waters even more heavenly than those of Western Maryland on Monday, Jan. 7, 2013, after losing his brief but very courageous battle with melanoma cancer.

Born April 29, 1936, in Somerset, Pa., he was the son of the late Patrick W and Rena Deaner Souders. Pat was a 1954 graduate of Fort Hill High School and a retiree of Pittsburgh Plate Glass. After retiring, Pat made and maintained countless friendships working as a bartender in Frostburg. He was an avid outdoorsman and loved to fish the streams and rivers and hunt the woods of Western Maryland. He also enjoyed getting his fingernails dirty by gardening, planting flowers and hunting morel mushrooms. He volunteered fifteen years to little league baseball in Frostburg and he coached hundreds of players during that time. During the last two years of his life, he was able to see the country from coast-to-coast with his second wife Connie and during that time they were both active members of the Church of Latter Day Saints. Pat especially loved reading and composing poetry. One of his own poems is below:

These things I tried to do in life

before I felt the twisting knife;

Greeted the morning with a shout

and smiled when day went running out.

Stopped to see the wildflowers dance,

laughed down fickle fancied chance.

Waited till I found my dawn,

then drowned my fires and headed on.

Pat was a special person who touched so many lives.

In addition to his parents, Pat was preceded in death by his first wife, Anna Jean (Twigg) and his daughter Christy Rayman.

Surviving are his second wife, Connie (Kline) a 1955 graduate of Fort Hill; sister Ruth Anne Parker, of Cumberland; sons, Patrick Souders and wife Jane, of Front Royal, Va. and Andy Souders and wife Kristen, of Oakton, Va.; son-in-law, Todd Rayman, of Gilbert, SC; five grandsons, Patrick III, of Shippensburg, Pa., Sammy, of Front Royal, Va. and Alec, Cole and Beau, of Oakton, Va.; granddaughter Sarah Beth Meehan, of South Carolina and great-granddaughter Madyson, of Shippensburg, Pa.; a very special nephew, Scott Parker, of Cumberland; step children; James Michael Reynolds and wife Linda, of Philadelphia, Pa., Christy Root and husband Michael, of California, Steven Reynolds and wife Susan and their children, Ethan, Emily, and Hannah, of California and Scott Reynolds and friend Donnie Heath, of California .
