BRUCE M. ANDERSON [Pell City, Ala.]

PELL CITY, Ala. — Bruce McDonald Anderson, 85, of Pell City, formerly of Cumberland, died Saturday, Jan. 19, 2013 at his home, surrounded by his loving family.

Born June 11, 1927, in Cumberland, he was the son of the late Alta (McDonald) Anderson and Harry S. Anderson, also of Cumberland.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers, Fred and Harry (Tuffy) Anderson.

Mr. Anderson attended Allegany High School where he was a star football player and was active in other sports. He left high school and enlisted in the Navy during World War II. He was discharged at War’s End and returned home to graduate from Allegany High School in 1948. He then attended Fairmont State for two years.

Mr. Anderson was employed at Potomac Valley Television (PVTV) for over 35 years. He was one of the first employees and was instrumental in installing the first cable system in Cumberland and the surrounding area. He was recognized many times for his loyalty, dedication and accomplishments by PVTV management and the Pioneer Club. He retired in 1985.

He, along with his wife, Evelyn enjoyed spending weekends in their motor home on the South Branch where he was known as the “grill master.” His family and friends could always rely on him for a good time and a few pranks. He loved to cook for family and friends and always seemed to cook enough for an army. He was a talented artist and was well known in Cumberland for his fabulous ice sculptures. He relished meeting people and never met a stranger.

Mr. Anderson moved to Florida in 1985 where he completed Sea School, and after obtaining his Captain’s license, captained the 46-foot charter boat, the “TRISH” out of Fort Lauderdale, Fla. At about that time, he also began carving again but instead of ice he used wood. He soon built a reputation for his elaborately detailed carvings, many of which were commissioned.

After moving to Pell City, in 1998 he continued his wood-carving hobby and was active in the local Carving Club.

He was an active member in various organizations including The Lion’s Club, American Association of Retarded Citizens, Girl Scouts of America where he was a scout leader, The Scottish Rite, The Cumberland Shrine Club, Past President of the Motor Corps, Royal Order of Jesters, Masonic Lodge

Mr. Anderson is survived by his wife of 57 years, Evelyn (Messick) Anderson; three daughters, Connie-Anderson Conrow, (Willie), Coconut Creek, Fla., Wendy Jones (Rick), Germantown, Tenn., Berri Rannells (Hamid), Columbus, Ga.; four granddaughters, Cassie (Buccelli) Boyle, of Pell City, Samantha Williams, of Germantown, Jordyn and Sarah Abtahi, of Columbus; three great-grandsons, Jacob Boyle, Sean Boyle, Brody Boyle, all of Pell City; one brother, Dick Anderson, of Baltimore; two sisters, Kay (Anderson) Rudd, of Cumberland, Patty Sue (Anderson) Bishop, of Allyn, Wash.; along with several nieces and nephews. He was also survived by his faithful cat “Tally” who never left his side.

In lieu of flowers the family requests donations made to The Urology Health Foundation, 3485 Independence Dr., Homewood, AL 35209. Please contact Sherry Wilson, 205-445-0117 or the American Heart Association.

A private celebration for family and close friends will be held in his home to celebrate his life, his accomplishments, and to remember his generosity to his wife, his daughters, grandchildren and friends while he was here with us.
