CATHERINE A. (WHITE) POWELL [Cumberland]

CUMBERLAND — Catherine A. (White) Powell, 92, of Cumberland, died Sunday, Jan. 27, 2013 at The Lions Center.

Born Dec. 31, 1920 in Cumberland, she was the daughter of the late John T. White and Bridget (Byrne) White.

She was also preceded in death by her husband, John Franklin Powell; and her nine siblings.

She had graduated from Allegany High School and Catherman’s Business School.

Mrs. Powell had been employed by the Cumberland Times-News, having worked as a bookkeeper and in the Circulation Department.

She was a member of Our Lady of the Mountains Parish-SS. Peter & Paul Shrine.

In addition, Mrs. Powell had served as a volunteer with the hospice program.

Survivors include her daughter, Cynthia A. Powell, West Chester, Pa.; her son, Bob Powell, Chapel Hill, N.C.; one granddaughter, Alexa Moore; two great-grandchildren, Eliza and Charlie; several nieces and nephews, including Bruce White, David Evick, Tim Ricker, and Kay Robinson; and special friends, Edwin Edgehill and Kacey Barb.

Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at Our Lady of the Mountains Parish — SS. Peter & Paul Shrine on Thursday at 10 a.m. with the Rev. Bernard Finerty, OFM, Cap, as celebrant.

Interment will be in SS. Peter & Paul Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to either the Catherine Powell Memorial Nursing Scholarship, c/o Allegany College of Maryland Foundation, 12401 Willowbrook Road, Cumberland, MD  21502 or The Lions Center, 901 Seton Drive, Cumberland, MD 21502.

The Upchurch Funeral Home, P.A., Cumberland, is in charge of arrangements.
