CUMBERLAND — David Allen Hetz, 62, of Bowman’s Addition, died Feb. 8, 2013 at the Western Maryland Regional Medical Center.
Allen was born Oct. 30, 1950 in Meyersdale, Pa. to Ruth Weimer Hetz and Floyd Hetz of Grantsville. He was preceded in death by his father and his first grandson, Dougan Kylen Smith.
Allen spent most of his working career as an Auto Tech in the Rockville and Gaithersburg areas.
An inveterate sportsman, Allen was well known for his skill as a softball player. He was a power hitter, and deceptively fast. He loved the game and the opportunities to play in “the states”. He was active president of his bowling league for several years, another sport he enjoyed. He came to appreciate the vagaries of golf as well, a game he admitted he played as much for the company as the sport.
Above all things, Al was an incredible dad and the world’s best pappy. His pride in, and love for his daughters and his grandsons were unmistakable. His talents at sports, as well as his wonderful vocal gifts, were generously passed along to his girls, and his beloved ‘boys’. The gap he leaves behind can only be filled by the rich memories he left, and our sure hope in Christ that he is finally whole, free from pain, and enjoying his first grandson and others who have gone before.
He is survived by his wife, Pastor Sandy Hetz; his daughters, Kerensa Gray and husband Lee, Waynesboro, Pa. and Devi Hetz; and his three grandsons, Raen Macallen Smith, Draesan Everette Hetz and Zane Michiah Hetz, Cumberland; his mother, Ruth; brothers, Ron and Kevin Hetz, Grantsville; his sisters, Janice Gauntz, Meyersdale, Roz Dukes, Pittsburgh, Pa. and Bobbie Miller, Baltimore., as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held Tuesday, Feb. 19, 2013 at 6 p.m. at Mount Savage United Methodist Church Mount Savage, with the Rev. Harry Burchel officiating.
Memorials may be sent to Mount Savage United Methodist Church or Scarpelli Funeral Home.
