JOHN W. OTT [Cumberland]

CUMBERLAND — John William Ott, 55, of Cumberland, went to be with our Lord on Friday, Feb. 8, 2013, at the University of Pittsburgh Presbyterian Neurological Trauma Center with his family by his side, the result of injuries received in an automobile accident.

John was born May 31, 1957, in Cumberland, the son of Mary “Myra” Elmira (Golightly) Ott and the late James “Jim” Ford Ott, Aug. 24, 2012.  

John will be remembered as a kind, loving and giving person. He loved all kids, especially Joseph, Maisie, Emma, Kate, Brian, and Grace. In addition to the people he loved, he also loved all living creatures, especially dogs.

John was a 1975 graduate of Fort High School where he played the trombone in the Fort Hill Band. John always loved music. As a child, he sang in the Grace United Methodist Church Children’s Choir. In recent years, he played the guitar and keyboard.  

John received his Bachelor’s of Science Degree in Chemistry from Frostburg State University and his Master’s Degree in Computer Science Technology from the Virginia Technology Institute. He was the senior engineer at Honeywell/Alliant Tech in Virginia. Following that, he was employed at Georgetown University and retired because of connective tissue disease. John was a member of the New Covenant United Methodist Church where he sang in the church choir. John also loved sports. He played tennis in high school and basketball in the church and recreational leagues. John taught the American Red Cross Swimming Class at Cumberland’s Constitution Park for many years.

In addition to his mother, John is survived by Natalie Wartzack and her children, Maisie, Joseph, (John’s godson) and Emma, all of Silver Spring; his sister, Dr. Terri Ott Lally and husband Steven, of Kittery Point, Maine; his brother, Robert Michael Ott and wife Lisa; his nephew and godson, Brian Ott, all of Columbia; his nieces, Kate Lally Bergeron, of Pasadena, Calif. and Grace Lally, of Kittery Point, Maine and his great-nephews, Liam Bergeron and Finn Bergeron, of Pasadena, Calif.  He is also survived by his uncles, John Golightly and wife Mary, of Cumberland, Jack Corrick and wife Marion, of Calaba, N.C., Bill Golightly, Reginald Golightly and Ernie Weiss, all of Pittsburgh, Pa.; as well as 14 cousins along with their spouses and children.

Friends will be received at the Adams Family Funeral Home, P.A., 404 Decatur St., Cumberland, (www.AdamsFamilyFuneralHome.com) on Saturday, Feb. 16, 2013, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.

A funeral service will be conducted in the funeral home on Sunday, Feb. 17, 2013, at 1 p.m. with the Rev. Dr. Chris Gobrecht officiating.

Interment will be private.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests the memorial contributions be made to the New Covenant United Methodist Church Music Program, 1705 Frederick St., Cumberland, MD 21502 or to the Fort Hill High School Scholarship Fund, 500 Greenway Ave., Cumberland, MD 21502.
