ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — George "Sonny" Wendell McElfish, 82, passed away Jan. 21, 2013, at the Bay Pines VA Hospice in St. Petersburg.
Upon graduating from Fort Hill High School in 1949, George joined the Marines as an apprentice electrician and served as a Master Sergeant until 1964.
He married Eunice Brown on Feb. 14, 1962 and enjoyed 47 loving years of marriage until her passing on Nov. 11, 2009.
George was a master electrician and a member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 307 of Cumberland, for 43 years until retiring in December 1992 and moving to Fort Myers, Fla. His IBEW membership totaled over 64 years.
George always busied himself with on-going projects around the house with the active participation of his loving wife, Eunice, “Eunie." George never knew a stranger. He will be remembered always as having a friendly smile and gracious hello for everyone. He enjoyed making people laugh.
He was predeceased by his wife, Eunice Ellen McElfish; and his daughter, Ladonna Sue McElfish McDonald. He was the son of the late Ruth Gladys Connor McElfish and Prentis McElfish, of Cumberland.
He is survived by two sons, Joseph McElfish and his wife Bobbie, of Woodbridge, Va. and Donald McElfish, of St. Petersburg. He is also survived by two grandsons, Joseph's sons Justin and Devin and three great-grandchildren, Justin's son Tegan and Devin's son Colby and daughter, Sophie.
A graveside memorial service and interment of George and Eunice's ashes at Hillcrest Memorial Cemetery will be announced at a later date.
