JOHN R. ALDERTON [Cumberland]

CUMBERLAND — John Reber Alderton, 81, of Cumberland, passed away on Wednesday, May 8, 2013, at the Western Maryland Region Medical Center.

Born Sept. 5, 1931, in Cumberland, Mr. Alderton was the son of the late Harry K. Alderton and Amelia (Reber) Alderton.  He was also preceded in death by two sisters, Gladys Rhodes and Christine Glennane; a brother, Kenneth Alderton; and was the last surviving member of his immediate family.

A United States Air Force veteran, John retired from Pittsburgh Plate Glass in 1991. He was a member of the Melvin United Methodist Church and a lifetime member of the Good Fellowship Club and the Cumberland Outdoor Club.

John loved hunting, fishing, and walking through the woods. He did well in football and played for three years at Fort Hill High School. John was then given a four year scholarship to the University of Maryland. He played there for four years and was 1952 co-captain, going undefeated, and winning the Sugar Bowl. John then was drafted for the Pittsburgh Steelers, playing defensive for one year. He then joined the Air Force where he played football at Bolling Air Force Base, Washington, D.C., for two years. John then went to Calgary Canada playing for the Stampeders and during the season he suffered a dislocated left shoulder and returned to Cumberland. He was given the First Dapper Dan Award and shared the second one with Jean Bibby.

John is survived by his wife of 59 years, Jean Alderton; his sons, John R. Alderton Jr., Winchester, Va., Douglas Alderton, Cresaptown, and Mark Alderton and wife, Rhonda, Cumberland. He also leaves behind his granddaughter, Mikayla Welsh; three grandchildren in Hagerstown; three step-grandsons and their families; as well as seven great-grandchildren, all of whom he deeply loved.

Friends will be received at the Adams Family Funeral Home, P.A., 404 Decatur St., Cumberland,  (www.AdamsFamilyFuneralHome.com) on Friday, May 10, 2013 from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m.

A funeral service will be conducted at the funeral home on Saturday, May 11, 2013 at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Ted Marsh officiating.

Interment will be in Saint Mary’s Cemetery.

The family requests that memorial contributions be made to the Union Rescue Mission, Post Office Box 1614, Cumberland, MD 21501-1614; or the Melvin United Methodist Church, Marion and Reynolds sts., Cumberland, MD 21502.
