HARRY HUGHES JR. [Cresaptown]

CRESAPTOWN — Harry Hughes, Jr., 89, of Bel Air, passed away on Monday, May 20, 2013 at the Western Maryland Regional Medical Center.

Born Dec. 30, 1923 in Primrose, Pa., he was the son of the late Harry Hughes Sr. and Matilda (Nicholas) Hughes. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Simon and Ronald Hughes.

Harry was a graduate of Ellwood City High School and attended Westminster College in New Wilmington, Pa. While in high school, Harry was the quarterback for the Ellwood City High School football team. He later played football for the Bolt Busters minor league football team and then for the Kittanning K.I. football team. Harry also played softball for the Ellwood City softball team. He was a Navy veteran of World War II. He was a member of St. Ambrose Catholic Church, Our Lady of the Mountains Parish. He was an avid golfer and a member of the Maplehurst Country Club. His true love was fishing, he made annual fishing trips to Canada.

Harry owned a grocery store in Kittanning, Pa. and a tavern in Ford City, Pa. He was employed at PPG as shift supervisor in the Quality Assurance Department. He was a very generous person who made a difference in many peoples lives. He was a fun loving person who enjoyed being around people and telling funny stories and jokes.

He is survived by his wife, Irene M. (Ganzlmar) Hughes; two sons, Stephen H. Hughes and wife Karen, Adrian, Pa. and Harry J. Hughes III and wife Laura, Swanton; four grandchildren, Sarah L. Hughes, Erin N. Hughes and fiance Caleb Grafton, Catherine A. Hughes, and Daniel S. Hughes. Also surviving are two sisters, Glenys Haine and husband Don, Kissimmee, Fla. and Ruth Rinker and husband Dan, Orlando, Fla.; a special nephew, Joseph Vasek and wife Rose, Ford City; and several nieces and nephews.

Harry loved his wife and two boys and was very proud of his grandchildren.

As per his wishes, he will be cremated.

Friends will be received at the Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A., Cresaptown (www.scarpellifh.com) on Saturday, May 25, 2013 from 3 to 7 p.m.

A memorial service will be held at the funeral home at 7 p.m.

Military honors will be accorded by the Post 13 Veterans Honor Guard.

Inurnment will be in the Maryland State Veteran’s Cemetery, Rocky Gap at a later date.
