RAWLINGS — Augusta Mae “Gussie” Trout Smith, 94, of Rawlings, passed away on Wednesday, July 10, 2013 at the Western Maryland Regional Medical Center after a long illness, surrounded by her loving family.

Born Nov. 12, 1918 in Wheeling, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late Herman F. and Anna E. (Bolen) Zeirott.

Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, George M. Trout, in 1973; her second husband, Conda O. Smith Sr., on Dec. 2, 2009;  a son-in-law, Stuart Stout; her sisters, Clara Zeirott Hofmann and Jo Ann Zeirott Ingram; and her a stepson, Conda O. Smith Jr.

Gussie graduated from Parkersburg High School in 1937 and worked at American Viscose Corporation. She lived in Rawlings and moved to Columbus, Ohio with her first husband due to his job. After his death, she returned to Rawlings and was married to Mr. Smith in 1977. She dedicated her life to Christ and caring for her husband, home and family. She was a lifelong member of Calvary Baptist Church, Cresaptown.

She will be greatly missed by her three children and their spouses, George Trout and his wife Jan, Wilmington, Ohio, Janet Trout Stout, St. Augustine, Fla., and Sandra Trout Varney and husband Charles, of St. Augustine; six step-children, Mary Susan (Smith) Eckard and husband Ron, Solon, Ohio, Elizabeth Ann (Smith) Nystrom and husband Harry, Houston Texas, David C. Smith and wife Anna Jean, Kerrville, Texas, Martha L. (Smith) Yura and husband Martin, Atlanta, Ga., John V. Smith and wife Shelly, El Dorado Hills, Calif. and Terri (Smith) Crawford and husband Mike, Rawlings. She had a combined total of 59 grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

Friends will be received at the Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A., Cresaptown ( on Wednesday, July 17, 2013 from 5 to 8 p.m.

A funeral service will be held at the funeral home on Thursday, July 18, 2013 at 11 a.m. with Pastor Bruce McBride officiating.

Interment will be in Biertown Cemetery, Rawlings.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Calvary Baptist Church, 14517 McMullen Hwy., Cresaptown, MD 21502.
