HELEN E. MCFERRAN [Cumberland]

CUMBERLAND — Helen Elizabeth McFerran, a month shy of her 101st birthday, died peacefully at her home on Tuesday, July 16, 2013.  

Born Aug. 18, 1912, she was the daughter of the late Charles R. McFerran and Edith Hinze McFerran. She was predeceased by her brother, Ferman H. McFerran.  

Helen graduated from Allegany High School in 1930 and the University of Maryland in 1934, after which she pursued a teaching career. For three years she taught at Cresaptown Junior High and the next 27 years at Allegany High. After retiring and into her 90’s she was an active volunteer at Meals on Wheels, Allegany Health Right, the Gordon Roberts House and the League for Crippled Children. She was a member of the Centre Street United Methodist Church, the Women’s Civic Club of Cumberland, Allegany County Historical Society as well as Allegany County Retired Teachers and Maryland Retired Teachers Associations.

She is survived by a niece, Margaret McFerran Hagan of Louisville; a nephew, Alexander Young McFerran of Dedham, Mass.; three great-nephews, three great-nieces, seven great-great-nephews and five great-great-nieces.  

In grateful thanksgiving, a memorial service will be held on Saturday, July 20, 2013 at 10:30 a.m. at the Centre Street United Methodist Church.  

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Centre Street United Methodist Church, 217 North Centre St., Cumberland, MD 21502.
