CUMBERLAND – Karen Ann (Whitacre) Miller, 60, of Cumberland, went to be with the Lord after a long and courageous battle with cancer, July 26, 2013, with her family by her side.

Karen was born April 14, 1953 in Cumberland, to the late Herb F. Whitacre and Marie Schultz Whitacre. She was also preceded in death by her nephew; and god-son, Brian Patrick Whitacre, July 27, 1996.

Karen graduated from Bishop Walsh High School in 1971, then went on to graduate from the Tri-State Beauty Academy in 1972. She then went to work at Fresh Hair Styles from January 1973 until it was bought where she was part of the sale and worked for Wharton’s Hair Styles until 1998, in between being a stay at home mom, she then went to work for Aber’s Cards and Gifts from 1998 until she just couldn’t work anymore. She was also a Girl Scout leader from 1987 to 1999. She was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church for 60 years. She was recently attending car shows with her husband and their prism blue 66 Chevy Nova Super Sport, that had won three trophies to date.

She leaves behind her loving husband of almost 34 years, Jack C. Miller; daughter, Danielle Miller; son, Phillip J. Miller and special friend, Raquel Galliher and her son Jaiden; brother, Ronald Whitacre and wife Sharon of LaVale; sister, Agnes Ruhe and husband Dennis of Sipesvile, Pa.; brothers-in-law, Dan Miller and wife Jean, High View, W.Va. and Dave Miller and wife Maggie, Patterson Creek, W.Va.; sisters-in-law, Rose Everett and husband Butch, Cumberland and Sussie Skidmore, Cumberland; uncle, Richard Schultz, North Carolina; aunt, Lucy Spicer and husband Carl, North Carolina; numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews; “nieces”, Brehana and Kasey Martin; grand-dog, Shadow; god-sons, Adam Ruppenkamp and Kenneth Martin; and special family friends, Mark and Marsha Malone and Peg Stickley.

Friends will be received at the Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A., (, 108 Virginia Avenue, Cumberland, on Monday, July 29, 2013 from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.  A Christian Wake will be held at 3:45 p.m.

Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at Our Lady of the Mountains, St. Mary’s Catholic Church, on Tuesday, July 30, 2013 at 10 a.m. with Fr. Bernard Finerty O.F.M., Cap. as celebrant.

The family would like to thank all the hospice nurses, especially Kim Hartz and aide Kirsten Jewell, for all their excellent care.

Pallbearers will be Ronald Whitacre, Adam Whitacre, Chuck Beatty, Dan Miller, Daniel Miller and Rodney Lipscomb. Honorary pallbearers are Paul Aber, Larry Bonner and Shane Nazelrod.

Interment will be in Hillcrest Memorial Park.
