ELDERSBURG — Paul Raymond Shaffer, 85, of Eldersburg, formerly of Cumberland, died on Saturday, July 20, 2013.
He was born in 1927, the son of the late Elsie A. Shaffer and the late Dora Shaffer. He was married to Mary Julia Coniff Shaffer, his wife of 63 years, who died in 2010. He was also predeceased by brothers, Edward Shaffer, Robert Shaffer, Francis “Penny” Shaffer and sister, Anna Marie Huff.
He was a graduate of La Salle Academy in Cumberland, where he twice won the Outstanding Player Award at the Eastern Catholic Invitational Basketball Tournament in Newport, R.I. He graduated from the University of Maryland and had a career as a federal government employee with the Social Security Administration. After retirement, he spent many years enjoying his grandchildren and sported a very competitive golf game. He was a veteran of the United States Army.
He is survived by sons and daughters-in-law, Clark Shaffer and Stacy Shaffer, of Westminster, Scott Shaffer and Jacqueline Shaffer, of Sykesville, Craig Shaffer and Bettijane Shaffer, of Sykesville, daughter and son-in-law Julie Voight and Robert Voight, of Sykesville; grandchildren Brock Shaffer, Brianna Kirkbride, Christina McCullough, Lindsay Goldstein, Meagan Wehn, Jesse Shaffer, Luke Shaffer, Kelly Shaffer, and Kathleen Shaffer and great-grandchildren Emmeline Goldstein, Hunter Goldstein, Grace Wehn and Jack and Ryan Kirkbride.
He donated his body to the Anatomy Board. The family will hold a Celebration of Life at a date in the future.
