JOHN W. ZEMBOWER [Bedford, PA.]

— BEDFORD, Pa. — John Willis Zembower, 84, of Bedford, Pa., went to be with his Lord and Savior on Wednesday, July 2, 2014 at UPMC Bedford Memorial, Bedford, Pa.

Born March 17, 1930, in Cumberland, Mr. Zembower was the son of the late Hiram H. and Emma (Fletcher) Zembower. He is also preceded in death by his brother, Harold H. Zembower; a sister, Ester (Zembower) Smith; and a niece, Julie Ackley.

John was a Korean War Veteran serving with the 82nd Army Unit. He was awarded the Korean Service Medal with three Bronze Stars, United Nations Service Medal, Republic of Korea Presidential Unit Citation, and National Defense Service Medal. He was honorably discharged in 1959 from the U. S. Army Reserves and then attended Frostburg Teachers College. He retired from Columbia Gas of Maryland. John was a long time member of Cornerstone Baptist Church, a faithful servant in the teachings of the Lord. He was an avid gardener, hunter, mentor, and lover of the great outdoors. John also enjoyed date nights out to local concerts with his lovely wife and friends. John was a kindhearted soul whom never met a stranger.

John is survived by his ever beautiful and endearing wife of fifty years, June Marie (Dean) Zembower; his nephews, Royce Smith and wife, Myrna, Payson, Ariz., and Steve Zembower and wife, Rebecca, LaVale; a special nieces, Shirley Appel, Cumberland, Sharon Zembower, LaVale, Sheryl Romesberg and husband, Wayne, Meyersdale, Pa., and other numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. He also leaves behind his special extended family, Ed Richards and wife, Sue, and their daughters, “his two pretty granddaughters,” as John would say, Ashley Baker and husband, Loudon, Cumberland, Mandy Linaburg and husband, Ricky and their children, Briley and Hayden, Cresaptown; his close friend and hunting buddy, Tom Simpson, Bedford, Pa.; and his longtime friends of more than fifty years, James Shaffer and the late James “Kel” Kelly.

A funeral service will be conducted at the Cornerstone Baptist Church on Saturday, July 5, 2014, at noon with Pastor David Hattenfield officiating. The family will receive friends two hours prior to the service.

Interment will be in Sunset Memorial Park.

Pallbearers will be Edward Richards, Jim Shaffer, Tom Simpson, Ricky Linaburg, Jr., Loudon Baker, II, Davey Yates, and Steve Zembower.

Military honors will be accorded at the cemetery by the Post 13 Veterans Honor Guard.
