JOHN C. LOWERY [Englewood, Fla.]

ENGLEWOOD, Fla. — John Calvin Lowery, 100, of Englewood, died peacefully on Thursday, March 14, 2013, at his home.

Born March 5, 1913, in Ellerslie, he was the son of the late Harry and Lucinda Lowery. He was also preceded in death by his wife, of 73 years, Annabelle (Lowery) Lowery on Sept. 17, 2011; one brother, Lewis Lowery and two sisters, Lura Breese and Sara V. Lowery.

Mr. Lowery retired from Ford Motor Company in 1978 in Sandusky, Ohio. In 1979 he and his wife moved to Florida. He was a Methodist by faith and a member of Englewood Elks Lodge 2378. He became an accomplished baseball pitcher, leading his team in the 1935 American Legion League championship. During that championship game he pitched the entire 13 inning game resulting in a 1-0 victory.

Surviving are his daughter, Rita Joan Kahla, of Englewood; three grandchildren, Stephen Kahla, of Lorain, Ohio, Renee Spencer and husband Michael, of North Ridgeville, Ohio and Rebecca Bailey and husband Brad, of Lawton, Okla.; four great-grandchildren, Katie and Ryan Spencer and Jacob and Jessica Bailey and his nephews, Jim and Fred Lowery.

Friends will be received at the Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A., 108 Virginia Ave., Cumberland, (www.scarpellifh.com) on Friday, March 22, 2013, from 2 to 4 and 6 to 9 p.m.

A funeral service will be conducted in the funeral home on Saturday, March 23, 2013, at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Ted Marsh officiating.

Interment will be in Hillcrest Memorial Park.
