MARTHA L. MCCOMAS [La Vale]

LAVALE — Martha Lee (Hersh) McComas, affectionately known as Cookie by family friends, 71, of LaVale, earned her angel wings as she departed her earthly life on Sunday, March 17, 2013, at her home surrounded by her daughters and loving husband, Tommy. She fought a strong and courageous battle with “never-smoked” lung cancer for three years.

Born Nov. 10, 1941, in Cumberland, Cookie was born the daughter of the late Edgar Lee Hersh and Hazel Marie (Lowery) Hersh. She was also preceded in death by her sweet younger sister, Judy Mildred Blacher and her cats Taffy, Tika, and Chewy.

A graduate of Allegany High School, class of 1959, Martha was the former Animal Control Officer for the county. Cookie was quick to smile, never knew a stranger or stray animal and had a strong love and passion for her family and church. She was a life-long member of Saint Mark’s Community Church. She practiced selfless activities through her volunteer work and desire to help others. Other words to describe her would be spirited, sassy, independent, generous, smart with a ton of common sense, determined with a dash of stubbornness, and always a good listener. Cookie enjoyed the simple things in life such as a morning coffee, a walk on the beach, looking for seashells, her backyard birds and wildlife, as well as being an avid mall walker.

Cookie worked at Allegany Ballistics Laboratory in the mailroom where she met her love of 51 years, Tommy McComas, who survives her. They married May 6, 1961. Cookie was a homemaker and worked at the local animal shelter for many years.

She is also survived by her daughters Kim Metzler and husband Ray, of Prattville, Ala. and Erin Johnson and husband John, of Jacksonville, N.C., who were raised to be strong, independent smart women who also enjoy the simple pleasures in life.  She loved and adored her grandchildren, Drew and Kendall Metzler and Conner and Emily Johnson. Cookie is also survived by her sister, Lois Shambaugh, of Cumberland, also known as “Sister 1” and “our rock.”

A graveside service will be conducted at Hillcrest Memorial Park on Tuesday, March 26, 2013, at 10 a.m. with Pastor Harold Shaffer officiating. A celebration of life ceremony will be held at a later date to be determined.

One of Cookie’s quotes was “flowers are for the living.” To honor her wishes, she requests that memorial contributions be made to the WMHS Home Hospice Care, 1050 West Industrial Boulevard, Cumberland, MD 21502 or the Allegany County Animal Shelter, Post Office Box 566, Cumberland, MD 21501-0566. She reminds everyone “please never smoke around your loved ones.”

Cookie wanted to say a special thank you to her amazing Dr. Deb, as well as her very caring Dr. Podrumar and the staff of the Schwab Family Cancer center. Most importantly, she and her family thank the WMHS Hospice Service nurses, Lori, Sheila, Ruby, and Jane. Lori, you will always be a part of our family.

The Adams Family Funeral Home, P.A., 404 Decatur St., Cumberland, (www.AdamsFamilyFuneralHome.com) is in charge of the arrangements.
