— FORT ASHBY, W.Va. — John Calvin Oates, 81, of Fort Ashby, died Sunday, April 28, 2013 at The Dawnview Center.

Born March 13, 1932 in Mineral County, he was the son of the late Manning Calvin Oates and Nellie Violet (Kimble) Oates.

He was also preceded in death by a son, Johnny Lee Oates; three brothers, James W., Harvey E., and Jack D. Oates; and, a brother-in-law, Glenn Bowman.

Mr. Oates had been a heavy equipment operator for area construction companies.

He is survived by two sons, Donald Eugene and Richard Oates, both of Keyser, W.Va.; two sisters, Carol Malone, and husband Buck, Fort Ashby, and Julia Bowman, Keyser; two brothers, Vernon “Doug” Oates, Keyser, and Arthur Oates, Cumberland; and, four grandchildren, Brittany, Jonathan, Randall, and Christopher.

Friends will be received at the Upchurch Funeral Home, Inc., Route 28, Fort Ashby, on Tuesday from 6 to 9 p.m.

The service will be conducted in the funeral home on Wednesday at 11 a.m., with Marshall Carder, officiating.

Interment will be in Potomac Memorial Gardens.

Serving as pallbearers will be Buck Malone, Eric Malone, Jason Oates, Harvey Oates, Jr., Rodney Bowman, and Michael Oates.
