— KEYSER, W.Va. — Virginia Lee Fertig Umstot, 84, of Georgia Avenue, Keyser, died Sunday, Oct. 28, 2012 at the Ruby Memorial Hospital, Morgantown, W.Va.

Born on May 5, 1928 at Keyser, she was a daughter of the late Lawson Koontz and Eula (Snyder) Koontz Wertman. She also was preceded in death by her stepfather, Albert Wertman; her first husband, Burke W. Fertig on Jan. 9, 1978; and three brothers, James, Marshall and Gladson Koontz.

Mrs. Umstot was retired from the West Virginia Department of Highways as a radio operator with 10 years of service. She also was formerly employed at the Heartland of Keyser Nursing Home for five years. Virginia was a 1946 graduate of Keyser High School and was a member of the Fountain Gospel Chapel and the Ladies Auxiliary of the United Transportation Union, Cumberland.

Surviving are her husband of 20 years, Richard Keith Umstot; three children, Ronald E. Fertig and wife Karen L. Fertig of Burlington, W.Va., Joy G. Fertig and companion Itchy Thorne and David W. Fertig and wife Karen J. Fertig, all of Keyser; three stepchildren, Brenda Diehl and husband Jim Bob and Pamela K. Swick and husband Steve, all of Keyser and Dr. Richard K. Umstot Jr. and wife Beth of Charleston, W.Va.; three brothers, Lawrence Koontz of Clarksville, Tenn., Douglas Wertman of Virginia and Ronald Wertman of Peterstown, W.Va.; two grandchildren, Scott and Jeffrey Fertig; nine step-grandchildren, Stacey Cook, Tyson and Shawn Swick, Jake, Emmy, Sam and Grace Umstot and Michael and Michelle Duvall; six great-grandchildren and two step-great-grand-children.

Friends may call at the Smith Funeral Home, Keyser Chapel, on Thursday, Nov. 1, 2012 from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.

Funeral services will be conducted at the Smith Funeral Home, Keyser Chapel, on Friday, Nov. 2, 2012 at 2 p.m. with Pastor Michael Goldizen officiating.

Interment will be in the Potomac Memorial Gardens, Keyser.

The family requests that memorial contributions be directed to the Mineral County Humane Society, HC 84, Box 12 Keyser, WV 26726.
