FAY C. MUMMERT [Cumberland]

CUMBERLAND — Fay C. Mummert fought the good fight and finished the race this Sunday, Nov. 11, 2012 at Ruby Memorial Hospital, Morgantown, W.Va. His belief in his Lord and Savior remained strong despite many challenges in his life. Even when the final hurdle of ALS (Lou Gehrig’s disease), took his ability to speak, his faith endured.

Born Feb. 12, 1934, in Cumberland, he was the son of the late Calvin Mummert and Martha (Tyson) Mummert. He is the last surviving member of his family. He was preceded in death by his brothers, Vernon and Raymond; and sisters, Gladys, Willa and Kay. He was also preceded in death by his beloved wife of 46 years, Marjorie Ann (Joy) Mummert; and step-daughter, Christa Lawson.

Out of high school, he worked as a stock boy and all-around assistant to Charlie McDade at McDade’s Market. He then paid his own way through Catherman’s Business School. Having earned his business certificate, he was employed in accounting and fiscal offices at ABL, Cumberland Urban Renewal and eventually became the City Housing Director for Cumberland. In this position, he touched the lives of many young families and achieved many accolades from state and federal agencies, including top awards from HUD. Fay was a long-term member of Christ United Methodist Church where he served as Church Council Director for many years. He was also a therapeutic foster parent and made positive changes in the lives of children and youth. One special young man, Vernon Neat considers Fay to be the most important role model of his life. He now serves as a sergeant first class in the Army in Newport News, Va., because of Fay’s positive influence. Fay enjoyed times spent with his daughters and their children. He was a lifelong fan of the St Louis Cardinals and the best cheerleader of his grandchildren. He could often be seen in the audience or in the bleachers at their sporting and musical performances.

Surviving is his wife of seven years, Shirley Lawson Mummert. He has been a loving husband to her and her son, Steven L. Lawson, Cockeysville. He also has four daughters, Beverly A. Landis, Bedford, Pa. and her husband Judd, Donna J. Neder, Erie, Pa. and her husband Eric, Michelle Walls, Hagerstown, and her husband Christopher, and Marcie Yenchenko and her husband Mark, Cumberland; and his 11 grandchildren, Jesse Wyatt, Emily Neder, Jasmine Warner, Lauren Neder, Andrew Neder, Maggie Pfaff, Jordan Warner, Riley Walls, Sasha Yenchenko, Carson Walls, and Hudson Walls.

Friends will be received at the Scarpelli Funeral Home, 108 Virginia Ave., Cumberland, on Tuesday from 5 to 8 p.m.

Funeral services will be conducted at Scarpelli Funeral Home on Wednesday at 11 a.m. with Pastor Christopher Walls, son-in-law of Fay and Pastor Jim Jeffries, from Lavale Baptist Church officiating.

Mr. Mummert will be cremated and his ashes will be entombed in the Mausoleum at Rest Lawn Memorial Gardens in Lavale.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions made be made to the ALS Association (MD, DC and VA chapters), 7507 Standish Place, Rockville, MD 20855.
