EASTON — Joseph U. Francis, 82, formerly of LaVale, passed away Monday, Oct. 7, 2013, at HeartFields Assisted Living at Easton, from a recurrence of cancer.

Born in Nikep, on July 11, 1931, he was the son of the late Nicholas Unuchek and Blanche Kazmierczyk Bothwell.

Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his son, Keith J. Francis; brother, Nicholas Unuchek; sisters, Christine Divan and Mary Riggs; brother-in-law, Rowe Miller.

Joseph served in the United States Air Force from 1951 to 1955. After leaving the military, he was employed by Buffalo Coal Company as a weighmaster.

He was a member of American Legion Faraday Post 24, Frostburg, and belonged to St. Patricks Catholic Church, Mount Savage. He served as a volunteer at the Western Maryland Health System for many years in the Cancer Treatment Center. He also volunteered for the Allegany County Literacy Program.

Mr. Francis is survived by his loving wife of 54 years Eleanor Joan Francis; sons, Frederick R. Francis, Ellicott City and Edward J. Francis and wife Laurie, Stillwater, Minn.; daughters, Diana C. Ross, West Mifflin, Pa., Marie (Neff) Jansen and husband, Mark, Columbia, and Helen J. Butler, Easton; 11 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Friends will be received at Hafer Funeral Service, P.A.—Chapel of the Hills, 1302 National Highway, LaVale, Wednesday from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m.

Funeral services will be held at the funeral home Thursday at 11 a.m.

Interment will follow at the Maryland State Veterans Cemetery at Rocky Gap.
