CUMBERLAND — Robert (Bob) Christopher Beem, 60, of Cumberland, passed away on Friday, November 8th, 2013, at the VA Medical Center in Martinsburg, W.Va., after a short and courageous battle with lung cancer.
Born April 21, 1953, in Chicago, Illinois, he was the son of Rosemary (Barton) Beem, of Palm Springs, Calif., and the late Clarence Francis Beem. Besides his father, he was preceded in death by his brothers, Peter Beem and William (Bill) Beem.
Bob graduated from Fort Hill High School in 1971. He served in the United States Navy from 1972 to 1978, serving our country for 6 years.
Bob is survived by lifelong friend and mother of his children, Sara Holtzman; his daughter, Tangela Wilson and husband William (Bill), Cumberland; sons, Robert Christopher Beem Jr., and Michael Francis Beem, both of Hagerstown; step-sons, William (Brian) Olinger, and Eric (Scott) Olinger, both of Cumberland; grandchildren, Cierra Wilson, Gunner Wilson, Erin Olinger, Autumn Olinger, Brianna Olinger, Bethany Olinger, and Caden Clair, all from Cumberland.
Surviving siblings are Mary Clare Kulwiec and husband Ray, James Beem and wife Patricia, both from Chicago, Thomas Beem and wife Diane, John (Jack) Beem and wife Patricia, both from Cumberland, Patrick Beem and wife Laura, from S.C., Elizabeth Steckmeyer of Pittsburg, Pa., Margaret (Peggy) Jelley and husband Charles of Monroeville, Pa.; sister-in-law, Karen Beem, Louisville, Kentucky (wife of deceased brother William (Bill) Beem, and also surviving are numerous nieces and nephews.
In 1989, Bob was one of the 1st, 100 people to make donations to help form Fort Recovery in Cumberland. The last 11 years he was a steadfast member of Alcoholic Anonymous. Bob’s joy in his life came from spending time with his children and grandchildren.
Friends will be received at the Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A., 108 Virginia Ave. (www.scarpellifh.com) on Tuesday, Nov. 12, 2013, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m.
A visitation service will be held at the funeral home on Wednesday, Nov. 13, 2013, from 10 to 10:45 a.m. at funeral home.
Interment will be in the Maryland State Veteran’s Cemetery, Rocky Gap. Graveside and Committal services will be officiated by Chaplain Bob Lloyd.
Military Honors will be accorded by the Post 13 Veterans Honor Guard.
Pallbearers will be Jack Beem, Pat Beem, Tom Beem, Robbie Beem, Scott Olinger, Brian Olinger, Bill Wilson and Mike Beem.
