CUMBERLAND  — Kenneth T. Shelley, 90, of Cumberland, died peacefully on Thursday, Nov. 28, 2013 at home.

Born Sept. 7, 1923 in Cumberland, he was the son of the late Theodore Clinton Shelley and Bertha Mabel (Riggleman) Shelley. He was also preceded in death by his first wife, Violet “Vi” Marie (Hansrote) Shelley; a grandson, Kenneth “Ken” E. Shelley; two brothers, and two sisters.

Mr. Shelley enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served as a commissioned officer. He was then employed by Civil Service. Mr. Shelley retired as Technical Director with NAVELEX, with the assimilated rank of Rear Admiral.

He was a 1941 graduate of Fort Hill High School. Ken earned his Bachelor’s Degree in Education from the University of Virginia in 1955. His advanced degrees, M.A., Psychology (1981) and Ph.D., Psychology and Education (1982) were both earned at the Columbia Pacific University.

Mr. Shelley was a member of Park Place United Methodist Church. He belonged to East Gate Lodge 216, A.F. & A.M.; 32nd. Degree, Cumberland Scottish Rite Bodies; Ali Ghan Shrine Temple, where he was a member of the Legion of Honor Unit; and Cumberland Court 117, Royal Order of Jesters. In addition, Mr. Shelley was a member of Lodge 271, Loyal Order of Moose and Frierson-Nichols Post 8, American Legion, Winter Haven, Fla.

Survivors include his wife, Catherine Jean (Ayers) Fey Shelley; two sons, Kenneth L. “Buzz” Shelley and wife Jane, of California, Md. and Mark C. Shelley and wife Elena, of Chesapeake, Va.; one daughter, Jill Marie Judd and husband Richard, of LaVale; 10 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; three step-children, Tammy O’Reilly and husband Mark, of Keyser, W.Va., Henry “Ted” Fey and wife Shelley, of Chesapeake Bay area and Fred Fey and wife Rita, of Bedford, Pa.; 10 step-grandchildren, and several stepgreat-grandchildren; a brother, Robert E. Shelley, of Lanham and a sister, Helen R. Lewis, of Bartow, Fla.

Friends will be received at the Upchurch Funeral Home, P.A., 202 Greene St., Cumberland, on Sunday from 1 to 4 p.m. Officers and members of East Gate Lodge 216, AF & AM will conduct a memorial service Sunday at 3:30 p.m. in the funeral home.

The funeral service will be conducted on Monday at 11 a.m. in the funeral home with the Rev. Lee Brotemarkle officiating.

Military honors accorded by Post 13 Veterans Honor Guard.

There will be a private entombment at Restlawn Memorial Gardens.
