HAROLD B. “GUS” FRIEND JR. [Cresaptown]

CRESAPTOWN — Harold B. “Gus” Friend, Jr, 85, passed away on Friday, March 28, 2014, and went to be with his beloved Lord and Savior at his home with his family by his side.

Born in Cumberland, on May 1, 1928, he was the son of the late Harold B. Friend, Sr. and Emma C. Friend.

In addition to his parents, Harold was preceded in death by his granddaughter, Shanna Redmond and his son-in-law, Russ Miller.

He was a 1946 graduate of Allegany High School and a 1948 graduate of Catherman’s Business School. After serving two years in the U.S. Army, Harold was employed by Hercules/Allegany Ballistics Laboratory until his retirement in June of 1988, having worked there for 36 years.

Harold was an active member of Calvary Baptist Church, Cresaptown. He accepted Christ as his Lord and Savior on June 18, 1955. From that day on, he chose to live his life in accordance with God’s will. He joined Calvary Baptist Church in Cresaptown and served as a Deacon, Treasurer, Sunday School teacher and Awana leader. He was very active in the church and supported the establishment of Calvary Christian Academy. He loved being on his computer and walking every evening until he became ill.

Surviving is his wife of 60 years, Alice Lee Uhl. They were married on June 19, 1953.

He is also survived by daughters, Bonnie Friend of Cresaptown and Patty Miller of Gonzales, La.; son, Harold B. Friend III of Chicago, Ill.; grandchildren, Kristal Shook and husband Jason, Michelle Shelton and husband Brett, Danielle Bosley and friend Brock Shriver and Patricia Friend; great-grandchildren, Alexander and Caroline Shook, Kyleigh and Brielle Shelton and Savanna and Jackson Bosley; sister, Rita Lincoln; numerous nieces and nephews.

Friends and family will be received at Hafer Funeral Service, Chapel of the Hills, 1302 National Hwy, LaVale, on Wednesday, April 2, 2014 from 11 to 1 p.m.

Funeral services will be held after the visitation at 1 p.m. with Pastor Bruce McBride officiating and nephew Pastor Merv Uhl assisting with Rusty Kitzmiller speaking.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be made in Harold’s name to: Calvary Christian Academy, 14513 McMullen Highway SW, Cresaptown, MD 21502; Schwab Cancer Center, 12500 Willowbrook Road, Cumberland, MD 21502; or Pediatric Asthma Research, American Lung Association, 55 W. Walker Drive, Suite 1150, Chicago, IL 60601.

The family would like to thank nurses and aids from Hospice for the support and care they gave to Harold and his family.
