JOSEPH L. MCGOWAN [Westernport]

WESTERNPORT — Joseph Leo McGowan, 73, of Westernport, passed away on Friday, Sept. 9, 2011, at home.

Born on Oct. 2, 1937, in Midland, Joe was the son of the late Samuel and Mary Ann (Farrell) McGowan. He was also preceded in death by his infant twin brother, Francis; his brother, Samuel McGowan; and three sisters, Margaret Dawson, Katherine Vadnais and Geraldine Livingston.

Joe graduated from Beall High School and retired from Westvaco Corporation in 1999 after 41 ½ years of service.

He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Judith Ann (Stakem) McGowan; his daughter, Krista Ann McGowan Davisson and husband Bernard Joseph Davisson II, of Oakland; his son, Joseph Mark McGowan and his wife Janny McGowan, and their son, Kevin Joseph McGowan, of Coconut Creek, Fla.; and his daughter, Diane Lee McGowan Long and her husband David Long, of Keyser, W.Va., and their children, Kaitlyn Elizabeth Green Skipper and husband Scott Skipper, of Las Vegas, Nev., Cody Long, Savannah Marie Long, and Gabrielle Lee Long, all of Keyser, W.Va.  He is also survived by a great-grandson, Samuel Orion Skipper, of Las Vegas, Nev.; one brother-in-law, Michael Stakem and wife Claudia Stakem, of Stafford, Va., and many nieces and nephews.

Joe was a member of St. Peters Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus, Piedmont Council 685, and K of C 4th degree Chief Justice Taney Assembly 0376.

The family will receive friends at the Boal Funeral Home, Westernport, on Monday, Sept. 12, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.  A prayer service will be held on Monday evening at 8 p.m. at the funeral home.  

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated in St. Peters Catholic Church, Westernport, on Tuesday, Sept. 13, at 10:30 a.m.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be directed to the McGowan-Davisson Scholarship Fund, FSU Foundation, 101 Braddock Road, Frostburg, MD 21532 or St. Peters Church Improvement Fund, 127 Church St., Westernport, MD 21562.
