RUBY E. (EVERLY) STEPPE [Cumberland]

CUMBERLAND — Ruby Eileen (Everly) Steppe, 89, of Cumberland, was called home on Tuesday, Dec. 10, 2013, after passing away at the Western Maryland Regional Medical Center.

Born Oct. 27, 1924 in Cumberland, Ruby was the daughter of the late James Walter Everly and Lottie (Crowfis) Everly. She was also preceded in death by her brothers, Fred, Robert, Leo, Clarence and Ray; her sisters, Viola Wagoner, Mildred Mayhew and Catherine Hughes; and was the last surviving member of her immediate family.

Ruby is survived by her daughter, Karen Ann Steppe.

Ruby was a proud graduate of Fort Hill High School, class of 1944. She was a retired nurse from Sacred Heart having worked at both locations with 40 years of service. Ruby loved nursing and earned the respect of her co-workers for her dedication and being a hard worker. Ruby loved to travel with her daughter, Karen. They enjoyed going to concerts, especially rock concerts. She was the epitome of “you’re never too old to Rock ‘n Roll.” Ruby enjoyed the theatre, especially Broadway, going to museums, and sporting events. She loved politics, astronomy, and everything Fort Hill. She was the embodiment of “once a sentinel, always a sentinel.” Ruby had a profound love for the environment and all creatures both great and small. Most of all, she just loved being an awesome mom.  Hers was a life well lived. How ironic that she was on the senior staff of the Fort Hill High School 1944 Sabre, which closed with Alice’s Immortal words from “Alice in Wonderland,” “What a lovely, lovely dream that was.”

Ruby was the best mother anyone could ask for and her passing leaves a void that will never be filled. She was my mom, my best friend, and my hero. In tribute to her, I offer the words from the song” You Raise Me Up:” “You raise me up so I can stand on mountains; You raise me up to walk on stormy seas; I am strong when I am on your shoulders; You raise me up to more than I can be.”

Ruby’s wish was to be cremated. Burial will be private.

Anyone wishing to honor Ruby can make a donation to the Fort Hill Scholarship Fund or any wildlife/animal rescue organization.

I want to offer a special thanks to the medical staff, RN’s, CNA’s, and the nursing students on 5N Progressive Care Unit of the Western Maryland Regional Medical Center for their outstanding medical care and their overwhelming kindness and support shown to my mother and me; words cannot express my appreciation.
