RESTON, Va. — Richard Ronald Wensell, 79, of Reston, formerly of Keyser, W.Va., died Tuesday, Nov. 26, 2013 at his home after a long illness.

Born on March 15, 1934 in Keyser, he was a son of the late Joseph "Becky" and Nina E. (Bobo) Wensell. He also was preceded in death by his first wife, Louise (Cottrill) Dean Wensell.

Mr. Wensell was a 1952 graduate of Keyser High School and he served in the U.S. Navy from 1952-56.

After working in several jobs, Richard began a long and successful career in the aerospace industry. He started in 1961 as a quality control technician with Emerson Research Laboratory in Silver Spring. In 1963, he moved to Fairchild Space Company in Germantown, where he remained until his retirement in 1993. He began his career in the infancy of the space program in the United States and he contributed to the success of many military and civilian programs. He retired as manager of the Environmental Test Lab.

Surviving are his wife, Susan H. Weston Wensell; one son, Marc Wensell and wife Alayne; two daughters, Sandra Sayers and Sherin Riffett; and three grandchildren, Kelley, Douglas and Timothy and their families. Also surviving are three brothers, J. Neil Wensell, J. Michael Wensell and Edward Wensell and wife Jean Ann; and a sister, Elinor (Wensell) Mantheiy and husband Bill.

A memorial service will be conducted on Saturday, Dec. 7, 2013 at 1 p.m. at the Smith Funeral Home, Keyser Chapel. The family will receive friends at the funeral home one hour prior to the service.

Inurnment will be in the Potomac Memorial Gardens, Keyser.
