LUTHER S. LITTEN SR. [New Creek, W.Va.]

NEW CREEK, W.Va. — Luther Scott Litten Sr., 79, of New Creek, passed away on Tuesday, Sept. 24, 2013 at his residence, surrounded by his family.

Born on Dec. 2, 1933 at Keyser, W.Va., he was a son of the late Gilbert Russell and Nanny Carol (Swain) Litten. He also was preceded in death by 11 brothers and eight sisters.

Mr. Litten was retired from the Westvaco Luke Mill with 37-1/2 years of service as a multi-craftsman. A U.S. Army veteran of the Korean Conflict, he was a life member of the New Creek Volunteer Fire Department for 40 years, where he served as Past President. He was also a member of the Nancy Hanks Post 3518, VFW, Keyser, Boyce-Houser Post 41, American Legion, Keyser and the Rees Chapel United Methodist Church, New Creek. Scott enjoyed working in his garden and spending time in his garage doing woodworking, a passion he passed on to his grandson, Chad. He also loved spending time with his family and friends.

Surviving are his wife of 56 years, Patricia (Shaffer) Litten; three children, Luther Scott Litten Jr. of Piedmont, W.Va., Mark A. Litten and wife Lou Ann of Burlington, W.Va. and Teri E. Picard and husband Douglas of Box Elder, S.D., formerly of Harpers Ferry, W.Va.; one granddaughter, Jessica Litten; three grandsons, Chad A. Litten, Luke Litten and Wilson Litten; and two great-grandchildren, Ethan and Jensen. Also surviving are three sisters, Jenny Jacox of Pennsylvania, Ruby Kimble of Virginia and Millie Biser of Burlington; one brother, Frank Litten of New Creek; his mother-in-law, Elizabeth Cogley of Terra Alta, W.Va.; sisters in law, Ruby Litten Lucas and Boyce Litten; sisters-in-law and their husbands, Darlene and Don Biser, Carolyn and Paul Viragh and Betty Marlene and Charlie O'Brien and numerous nieces and nephews. He is also survived by his two faithful companions, “Pepper” and “Jasper” and “The Picard Boys”; “Austin,” “Bandit,” “Dakota,” “Dallas,” and “Xander”, his faithful “grand boys.”

Friends may call at the Smith Funeral Home, Keyser Chapel, on Sunday, Sept. 29, 2013 from noon until 2 p.m.

Graveside services will follow immediately after the visitation at the Potomac Memorial Gardens, Keyser, with services led by Robert Amtower.

 New Creek Volunteer Fire Department will accord fireman's honors at graveside. Military honors will also be accorded by the West Virginia Honor Guard and Post 13 Veteran's Honor Guard, Cumberland.
