DANVILLE, Va. — James A. Stevens Jr., 78, passed away at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center in Winston Salem, N.C., on Oct. 10, 2013 due to complications from surgery.
Mr. Stevens was born in Allegany County on April 2, 1935 to James and Lucille Stevens. He was a 1953 graduate of Beall High School.
In 1955, he married his high school sweetheart, Peggy Felker and they enjoyed nearly 59 years of marriage together.
Jim lived in Tombstone, Ariz., Merritt Island, Fla., Fort Ashby, W.Va., Palm Coast, Fla., and most recently Danville, Va. He served in the Navy Reserves and U.S. Army and worked at Cape Canavral in Florida, Allegany Ballistics Laboratory and S. Schwab Company in Maryland, Hammock Dunes Community in Florida and Carlbrook School in South Boston, Va.
Jim will be remembered by all that knew him as a loving husband and father, an avid golfer, a loyal friend, and a dependable and responsible employee. His piercing blue eyes and sense of humor will never be forgotten.
Jim is survived by his wife, Peggy Felker Stevens, Danville; daughter, Ladona Stevens Gorham and her husband, Jeff of Spotsylvania, Va.; son, James Stevens III of Morgantown, W.Va., daughter, Paula Hendrix of Navarre, Fla.; five grandchildren; and many nephews and nieces.
He is also survived by his sister, Dona Smith of Tennessee; and brother, Joe Stevens of Grantsville. He was also very close to his brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Don and Carole Zarefoss of Boonsboro.
A private memorial will be held in the spring.
