MARY R. DICKENS [Levels, W.Va.]

LEVELS, W.Va. — Mary Rebecca Dickens, 91, of Levels, W.Va., died on Friday, Nov. 1, 2013, at her home.

Mary was born Feb. 7, 1922, in Levels, W.Va., the daughter of the late Ernest B. and Velvia M. (Powell) McBride. She married W. Quentin Dickens on Feb. 9, 1952, in Baltimore.

Mary is survived by three daughters, Debra A. Miller, of Levels, W.Va., Susan D. Dickens, of Ridgeley, W.Va. and Jane V. Dickens-Bowman, of Winchester, Va. and husband Gregory W. Bowman; five granddaughters, Alana K. Nail, of Winchester, Va., Angelique K. Arrington, of Smyrna, Ga., Danielle S. Seib, of Fort Ashby, W.Va., Isabella R. Dickens-Bowman and Olivia C. Dickens-Bowman, of Winchester, Va. and five great-grandchildren, Joshua R. Loy, of Augusta, W.Va., Jeremy R. Williams, of Winchester, Va., Josey R. Nail, of Winchester, Va., Zoey A. Arrington, of Smyrna, Ga. and Alexis G. Seib, of Fort Ashby, W.Va. Mary is also survived by two siblings, Roland E. McBride, of Bruceton Mills, W.Va. and June M. Chaney, of Levels, W.Va. as well as her sister-in-law, Anita M. Dickens, of Levels, W.Va. and several nieces, nephews and many friends.

In addition to her parents and her husband, Mary is preceded in death by six siblings, Claude R. McBride, Austin C.H. McBride, Roscoe L. McBride, Kenneth (Dan) P. McBride, Walter B. McBride and Doris M. Smoot, as well her son-in-law, Gary C. Miller.

Mary was a 1940 graduate of Romney High School. She was the first of her family to graduate from high school and go on to higher education. She completed the three-year nursing program through Cumberland Memorial Hospital and began her 40+ year career as a Registered Nurse working at Union Memorial Hospital in Baltimore and Cumberland Memorial Hospital, Cumberland. In 1972, she transitioned to school nursing with Hampshire County Schools and retired in 1988. A proud time in her nursing career was being selected to travel to Denver, Colo. in the late 1940’s to assist with the polio epidemic and iron lung treatments. She took great pride in wearing the white nursing cap and pins associated with being a Registered Nurse during that era. She will be widely remembered by multi-generations of Hampshire County students for her regular scoliosis and head-lice checks, as well as the summer migrant-worker student program.

Mary was a 60-year, active member of the WV Extension Homemakers’ Association. She was also a 50+ year member of the Order of the Eastern Star, Romney Chapter 84. A self-taught Bible scholar, she was an 80+ year, active member of the Levels Meth-odist Church, including serving as Sunday school superintendent, Sunday school tea-cher and treasurer for many years. As a life-long resident of Levels, Mary served the community in a variety of ways, home visits for medical care, election poll worker and school tutor.

Family and friends will be received on Wednesday, Nov. 6, 2013, from 5 to 6:30 p.m. with a memorial service to follow at 6:30 p.m. at the Shaffer Funeral Home, Romney, W.Va. Services will be conducted by Pastors Steve Davis and Harold George.

At Mary’s request, her body will be cremated and interment at the Levels Cemetery will be held at a later date.

Memorial contributions can be made to either the Levels Cemetery Fund or the Levels Methodist Church.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Shaffer Funeral Home, Romney, W.Va.
