MERLIN H. “POLK” BARB [Cumberland]

CUMBERLAND — Merlin H. “Polk” Barb, 86, of Cumberland, died Wednesday, Sept. 4, 2013, after a battle with cancer.

Merlin was born Nov. 30, 1926, in Winchester, Va.

He was the son of the late Perry David and Ada Virginia (Hansberger) Barb. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers, Doug Hansberger, Terry Barb and Dick Hansberger; sisters, Esta Ryan, Dorothy Whetzel, Vivian Delawder and Marie Delawder; a son, Tony Frederick Barb; a son-in-law, William Koelker and two step-grandchildren, Lisa Clark and Kathy McCoy. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family.

Merlin was an Army veteran of the Korean War era where he was an ambulance driver. He worked for 43 years at Consolidated Orchards and was a life member of Clifford B. Sisler Post 9451 VFW of Oldtown.

He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Louise (Walker) Barb; his sons, Jerry W. Barb and wife Betty, of Oklahoma, Ray Barb and wife Barbara, of Cumberland and Jody Barb, of Staunton, Va.; his daughters, Sandy Koelker, Renae Tucker and husband Harold and Monica Britton and partner Bruce Gates, all of Cumberland; eleven grandchildren, Kim Kesner and husband Jaime, Kelley Holler, Karrie Koch-Ziler and partner Glennie, Kristi Koch, William Carroll III and wife Christy, Eric Barb and wife Liz, Nicholas Barb and wife Amanda, Alex Barb and partner Keith, Angela Miller and husband Steve, Kassie Miller and partner Justin and  Eric Miller II and wife Angel. He is also survived by 16 great-grandchildren and six step grandchildren, David Clark, Janette McBride, Jay Green, Glenn Green, Tony Koelker and Bill Koelker.

Friends will be received at the Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A., 108 Virginia Ave., ( on Friday, Sept. 6, 2013, from 10 a.m. to noon.

A funeral service will be conducted in the funeral home at noon with the Rev. Wayne Sloan officiating.

Military honors will be accorded by the Combined Veteran’s Honor Guard.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to the Western Maryland Health Systems Hospice Services, 1050 Industrial Blvd., Cumberland, MD 21502 or to Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A, 108 Virginia Ave., Cumberland, MD 21502.
