WILLIAM O. “BILL” GILPIN [Cumberland]

CUMBERLAND — William O. “Bill” Gilpin of 613 Ridgewood Ave., Cumberland, passed away Nov. 3, 2012 at his home surrounded by his loving family.

He was born May 16, 1922 in Cumberland, the son of the late Okey and Ellen Gilpin. He was preceded in death by a brother, Robert L. Gilpin.

Bill was a 1940 graduate of Fort Hill High School and attended Catherman’s Business School. He started working at the B&O Railroad in 1941 until he was called into service in January 1943, by the Army Air Force and served in Iceland, England, and France. After being honorably discharged in February 1946, he returned to his employment at the B&O Railroad. He was later recalled to active duty in the Korean War by the U.S. Air Force in Tripoli and Libya for one year. Following his discharge he returned to his employment at the B&O Railroad. He worked there until his retirement in June 1983. Bill was a member of Living Word Lutheran Church and a member of the Church Choir. Bill had been a member of church choirs for over 50 years. He also was a member of the South Cumberland Business and Civic Association, the Fort Hill Band Parents Association, and worked many years at the stadium concession stand. Bill was also a member of the St. John Duck Pin Bowling League, and he enjoyed visiting his relatives in Garrett County.

Surviving are his wife of 45 years, Louise (Lathrum) Strait; two step-daughters, Janis L. (Strait) Dobbins and husband Wesley of Gassaway W.Va. and Kimberly A. (Strait) Helmick and her husband Kurt of Pinto; daughter, Kristina Ellen (Gilpin) Hughes and husband Raymond of Germantown; seven grandchildren, Scott Helmick and wife Tina, Eric Helmick and wife Leslie, Brian Dobbins, Annabeth Hughes, Carolyn Hughes, William Gilpin Hughes, and Patrick Hughes; two great-grandchildren, Daniel Helmick and Kayla Helmick.

Friends will be received at the Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A. 108 Virginia Ave., Cumberland, on Monday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.

A funeral service will be conducted at the funeral home on Tuesday at 11 a.m. with Pastor Mark Dill officiating with the choir from Living Word Lutheran Church assisting. Friends will be received one hour prior to the service.

Interment will be in Hillcrest Memorial Park.

In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to the Living Word Lutheran Church, P.O. Box 1825, Cumberland MD 21502.

Military Honors will be accorded by the Post 13 Veterans Honor Guard.
